Anger at inhumane conditions in earthquake survivor camps, at the exclusion of exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide’s Fanmi Lavalas from November elections and at the occupying UN military force, foreshadowed the outbreak of rage seen in Haiti after the failed November elections and the revelations that the UN likely brought cholera to Haiti.
I visited Haiti in September 2010, before the elections and before cholera. I’ve come to understand today’s wrenching social and political climate through the lens of what I saw at that time.
