This is a film I made after some adventures underground with Steve Duncan (undercity.org) last summer. We also have a teaser video which you can watch on my vimeo page (vimeo.com/5752275).

For more information about the video and our other adventures please contact Andrew Wonder (Director/Cinematographer) at andrewwonder@mac.com.

Steve and I just completed another underground expedition with Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erling_Kagge). It was featured in a three page article on the front page of the NY Times metro section and was written by Alan Feuer (nytimes.com/2011/01/02/nyregion/02underground.html). We were also covered by NPR's Jacki Lyden whose report will be aired on 1/2/11 and posted on NPR's site (npr.org/2011/01/02/132482428/into-the-tunnels-exploring-the-underside-of-nyc).

Shot on a canon 5d mkii with canon 24 f/1.4 (version 1) with the zacuto rapid fire, Zoom H4N and a sennheiser g2 wireless lav. The zacuto was really great at being there when I needed it but also staying out of the way.

Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!

At first my inner ninja was highly stimulated.. They I was on the edge of my seat with those trains rippin by. Then I'm like, " I love Steve Duncan" right after. "I don't think we should do that but let's go"...

Well done. I've been watching so many documentaries lately and think this has some major potential for a full length.. Something alone the lines of "Urban Explorer" kinda thing..

    Much love, this was inspiring!

Andrew, this is really great. I just love this. The greatest places are often near us and we just have to discover them. I live in a small village, and even here you can find some new and forgotten places, so I can only imagine what you can find in big city. Thank you for sharing this.

Andrew - I have just finished watching this and I really enjoyed it. It was shot very well, great audio and Steve is a very interesting and adventurous dude. I'm fascinated with this type of stuff, especially being a New York City resident myself. I frequently ride over the Williamsberg bridge and I can't believe he (and you) climbed it.

I have just posted this to my website heavyhittas.com - its a New York lifestyle website and I hope this gets seen by tons of people. Maybe one day we can work together on a project.

    @Andrew

Can you tell us how you met this guy you followed around?

I would LOVE to do some of the things you guys did like walk through the train tunnels and go see that old station with the green tiles, but the risk of dying by getting hit by a train, or by slipping and falling on the third rail is too big of a risk for me to do something like this :/

Anyways, great job man. I didn't think I'd be able to watch the whole 30minute video, but I didn't even notice the time fly by once it started!

  • This was amazing! Truly enjoyed every second of it. This was really interesting, Steve is an incredibly interesting guy and you are lucky to work with him. The filming was really good as well: all in all, a really enjoyable piece.

Now, I wonder if you are making anything similar about the trip with Kagge as well?

Really good job with the shots and pacing. I like that you included a lot of the discussion of what to do, Steve's thoughts on what he's doing and the interviews with the Lincoln Tunnel folks while keeping it lively and interesting.

Brought back some great memories of subways and the harbour bridge in Sydney. I haven't done much exploring the past couple of years but my heart was pounding a few times watching this. Way to catch the explorer's rush!

Hey man just to say what a great film you have there. Really really enjoyable, iwandered on here expecting to see something quck but found your video and was captivated for the whole time.

It looks amazing on the 5d. How did you get that shot with steve climbing up the ladder in the section before you got onto the top of the bridge.

Great film, i look forward to more

It was absolutely wonderful. My heart was pounding the entire time, and I couldn't help being scared for your life. Oh, how I wish I could just explore like that. I think I just might, but I'll stay away from the train stations and bridges. I'm sure there are much.. safer ways to explore. Probably not as fun, but I'll save the dangerous adventures for later. And when I mean later; I mean when I'm at least twenty.

Super interesting material. Urban exploration is something that's fascinated me since I first heard about it, and may be part of the reason I might be moving to NYC. Thank you for giving me more reason to do so.

I won't be climbing any bridges though. That was crazy.

I like how you guys started from underground and ended up on top of a bridge. Very cinematic videography that kept me watching. Nice choice in music and not overkill. My favorite is the shot at the end when you guys were on the bridge. I paused the video at 27:05 and stared at it for a while. I'm inspired, thanks for that.

As a (urban) history student from the Netherlands i am truly amazed and inspired by this video. For me this is the way urban history should be told. In my home town (Scheveningen/The Hague) we dug up some old ww2 Atlantik wall bunkers, but that is nothing compared by what these guys are doing and risking. Thanks for keeping the history alive!
