Roll Up Your Sleeves: The DIY Counterculture (27 mins)

"DIY is about giving the tools to the people that have something to say"

Roll Up Your Sleeves is a manifesto for an alternative way of organising, working and thinking.

The debut film from director Dylan Haskins was shot over a two year period by Haskins and his friends. What begins with non-profit all ages gigs in his own home 'The Hideaway House' in Ireland leads Haskins to drive US folk punk band Ghost Mice on their European tour and to the realisation that this is all about much more than music.

This youthful, energetic documentary explores the global phenomenon of do-it-yourself culture, why it's becoming increasingly popular and the problems it has yet to overcome.

Roll Up Your Sleeves examines the relationship between DIY culture and the need for autonomous social spaces, looking at various projects across Europe and how these compare with the situation in Ireland.

At its heart this is a film about life and how a growing number of people are choosing to live it.

Interviewees include Ian MacKaye of legendary bands (Fugazi, Minor Threat, The Evens & Founder of Dischord Records), Ellen Lupton (author of DIY: Design it Yourself & Curator of Contemporary Design at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York), Ellie and Louise Macnamara of Irish band Heathers and members of long running Dutch experimental punk band The Ex.

Hi, thanks for your comment. The Nexus was such a great space, hope it's still going as strong as ever!

The band have been broken up for a few years now but they were called Langdon Beck and the song is 'Up The Village'. They're from Kilcoole in Co. Wicklow in Ireland.

    Here you go:

Excellent film Dylan! Glad to see that the DIY community in Europe is going strong. I'm from Los Angeles, and over the past couple years I have been working on a documentary about our music community. The music you used was also great. Andrew Jackson Jihad has been through L.A. before and I was lucky enough to see them play in a cramped hallway at an amazing all ages venue that used to be around, but it met the same fate as so many other DIY spaces these days. Well, congratulations and I hope that you continue to help create a positive DIY community around the world!

    Hey Dylan!
Also truly thanks for this nice and inspiring film!
After seeing stuff like this, I really feel like going on a trip and see all this great places and people... I think I should do it soon... :)
Secondly I wanted to know what's the song in the outro? -By the way excellent soundtrack!

Keep up with such great work and all the best,
    F.

Hi Frederik, Thanks for your comment. I'm not sure if your mean the song in the closing sequence or the credits? The closing sequence is 'One Click' by The Max Levine Ensemble from Washington DC, and the music for the credits is 'Caddyshank' by a amazing Irish band called Adebisi Shank. Both should be available online!

Really good. We've been DIY'ing since around 1987 so we know it's more than a means to an end. Great doc, well done. Steve
