    You found the lilliputians!!
  • Keith Loutit plus 3 years ago
    yes, they're everywhere in sydney.
  • rastAsia plus 3 years ago
Ah thats why I avoid going there. Might trample on little people. : ) So this was shot with a lens baby? On what camera?
  • Zsolt Vajda 3 years ago
It's only a guess, (I'm not familiar with video editing stuff) but with Photoshop's Lens Blur filter could get you a similiar result.

    Unless it's made with a real tilt-shift camera/lens/whatever.

    :)
  • rastAsia plus 3 years ago
Zsolt, I know that process using Gradient + Lens Blur filter on photoshop ;) But unless there's a video filter that can get the process done - then its a much delightful process. Either wise its quite a bit of work processing each frame of picture even with History Automation. That'd be thousands of pictures for this length of video. 25 f x 183 sec for this case = 4575 photos.. hehehe...

But what I'm sure he might have done is raise the Saturation level and tweaked the RGB Curves in post to get the model paint look. But definitely shot with tilt-shift lens as answered in his first video.
  • Jackie Wu 3 years ago
this movie was a real tilt and shift one, but you know after effects does have lens blur...
  •
  • Peet Sneekes plus 3 years ago
That is just awesome! @robertanderson: good point .. what makes us feel like it is? I only noticed it at the point when the interaction between the boats got very 'real'.

Oh, so good. I've always liked the miniature focus effect, but to apply it to video is novel.

May I suggest a video in which your focus shifts in "real time" (after the timelapse has been applied), as if the cameraman watching decides to focus on a different part of the miniature world? I imagine that would really challenge your post-production work :)
  • Keith Loutit plus 3 years ago
    Hi Ethan,

Thanks for the suggestion - I focus with lenses, not in post which poses some challenges but you've got me thinking. thanks again.
  • Ethan T plus 3 years ago
    Ah, wow. Very cool, then.
  •
  • Dave A 3 years ago
heh, it's great how many people think these vids are CGI or accomplished in post. A good sign of the effectiveness of the technique to mess with people's heads :-)

Nice work. I like what Ethan T said earlier about the real time focus shift, I think that could be really interesting and panning or zooming around too perhaps?
  • Keith Loutit plus 3 years ago
thanks Shaun. I have some ideas about this after reading ethans feedback.hopefully soon.

I love this so hard. I was planning to try this technique for the live action portions of a stop motion art film but wasn't certain it would work.

You've done a fantastic thing! Well done! These clips are incredible! Wow!
  • Keith Loutit plus 3 years ago
Hi Herself - please post some work if you do. Keith.
  • Shelley Noble 3 years ago

WOW, great work, Keith, DSLR with telephoto lenses? Reminding me of those preview videos of NIKON D90 with variable lenses producing interesting effects other than what the general DV cams can do. Nice job! Can't wait to see you next episode :)

  • Pete Nakos 3 years ago
This is fantastic! Very clever. Everything looks miniture because the selective blurring replicates how we view objects up close. A high angle, as well as strong lighting (as if the scene was lit by a lamp) and saturated colours (to give a plastic-y look) also help to create the illusion of a model set.

Can I ask how long the interval is between shots? Seems to be about 1/2 sec.
  • Keith Loutit plus 3 years ago
hi pete. The interval varies between 1 and 6 seconds depending on the subject. Regards
  •
  • dan z 3 years ago
hi keith, sorry if you've already answered this, but is this with an HD video camera? and is it possible to get the same part-blur effect without the image seeming miniature? thanks
  •
  • dan z 3 years ago
oh, its a stills camera yeah? possible to use the lens on an HD vid cam do you know?
  • Keith Loutit plus 3 years ago
Hi Dan, You should be able to do this with a 35mm adapter and TS lenses. I use timelapse with DSLR as the speed helps me get the look I'm after and I archive high quality stills to print frames. Keith.

This makes me smile uncontrollably and it has the same effect on everyone that I show it to.
I love how these videos of yours makes it seem like being a human is so much fun. lol I don't know if that will make sense... It just presents such an interesting perspective on humanity and civilization. Your style makes everything seem minute, but it makes me think so big.

thanks keith. best with it all, a fresh way of seeing sydney is always a good thing ; ill post the result if i end up shooting with the lenses.

Pitch shift the audio to create a munchkin sound track. Synchronize the frame rate to a multiple of the music tempo. All those bank executives & their yachts reduced to scale models.
