You can definitely see it, but I wonder if it's noticeable when you aren't looking for it.
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
for the most part I am sure it doesn't matter, jello is never a problem in my shoots, but situations like a fast car chase or a train going by at high speed for example, one will def notice it.
  • Daniel Soderberg plus 1 year ago
Rolling shutter really sucks because it makes final cut's smoothcam/steadicam filter (BCC's optical stabilizer) useless. If you've tried stabilizing shaky shots from these DSLRs with this kind of filter, then you know what I'm talking about. Basically when you take away the unsteady shake of the shot, all you are left with is objects that squish and unsquish like jello for no reason.
Thanks for the comparison, looks like the GH2 isn't much better.

Check imovie rolling shutter correction...It works great

Yea, or if you're shooting the prop on a plane. There are a very limited number of shoots (for me) that would make the rolling shutter an actually issue.

A very effective comparison Mike. Thanks for going to the trouble of doing it.

    Mike,

Thanks so much for the test. They look very similar to me. As an aside, I like the picture from the GH2 a little better.... maybe because I just got mine... :))

    Thanks for sharing this test.
There is some jello in both cameras. Like you said in your blog, very few scenarii need some shots like "Jason Bourne trilogy". Did you use the OIS lens in this test ? By the way some soft like Mercalli from prodad reduce the jello effect.

Happy new Year, Mike ! Peace
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
Happy New Year, Abbas!, nope, my fav lenses, the Nokton on the GH2 and L 50mm on the Canon.

    Little improvement in rolling shutter.
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
looks all the same to me, unless its a CCD

  • Carey Dissmore plus 1 year ago
thanks for confirming that in terms of rolling shutter, neither has enough difference to lift them from the "THAT SUCKS" category. (LOL my 60D does it too)
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
haha, true, looks like all those large sensor CMOS cameras are stuck in the mud re jello, maybe something revolutionary in the next generation, wouldn't hold my breath though

Excellent posting, thanks. I am finding some really shocking interlace problems once activating the 'red button' all-auto (sorry I don't have the camera or the manual under hand, just spent a couple hours with it a couple days ago), which only seem to occur with that iQ (?) or 'red button override' button...have you seen his? Its very noticeable looks a whole lot like incorrect pulldown looks like in Quicktime...I tried different pulldown algorithms in fcp, will try in Avid next where at least I know the system is predictable/repeatable as far as the pulldown measures go.
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
hmmm, not sure, I haven't used the red button yet...

Thanks for sharing Mike! Although I'm quite shock with the Canon's performance in terms of rolling shutter, but i don't feel proud with my PL either :) LOL.

    Happy New Year, Mike!

Hallo Mike. Gesundes neues Jahr. Ist die Pana der Canon wirklich überlegen? In meinen Augen nimmt sich das nicht viel.
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
Hey Marcus, danke, dir auch! gleichmassig schwach, kein vorteil

I expected to see a big difference between the two cameras. I thought the Panasonics had less rolling shutter. But then, this test proves that they equally suffer from this.
Thankfully not a big problem in most "normal" situations.
Do you really think that overall the GH2 is a direct 5dII competitor? I would rather consider this as an alternative to the APS-C EOS bodies.
    Happy new year.
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
different tools for different task, I find they complement ea other very well

  • Martijn Doornenbal plus 1 year ago
Ok, I didn't see any difference, but what about moire?
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
didn't test moire yet, but it sure looks like the gh2 will be the winner

    GREAT JOB Mike!!!
Can you tell us what lens on 5d2 and gh2?

    looks like EF 24 1.4 AND 25mm on gh2
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
thanks Alex, L 50mm on Canon, Nokton 25mm on GH2. The Gh2 was mounted on top of the 5D which caused a slightly different point of view.
  •
  • really this panasonic seems amazing. All the new technology that is coming like the pentax or nikon cameras are amazing too.

I don't think the traffic below appreciated the rolling shutter either!

Hey Mike ISO 160 is not a good setting for the 5D2. With that being said, there are limitations with the HDSLRs. Slow pans are required. But from your work I can tell you know the tricks to make things look good with both cameras.
  • Mike Kobal plus 1 year ago
yeah, we know what these cams are capable of, however it is just as important to remember their weaknesses.....

Informative? No one should be doing whip pans anyway. Yes the GH2 is better at whip pans, so what? The more interesting thing is just how much better the video quality is on the GH2 in this clip. The GH1 was a hidden gem amongst all the Canon news but clearly the GH2 has left Canon needing to really step up their game. The 5dM3 or whatever is next may be great, but it will come at a very inflated cost. The GH13 and GH2 have been the quiet hot ticket for years.

So the GH2 really is better than the Canon cameras?
