Really enjoyed the video. Made me want to be there. I do virtual sailing and I found you in our chat (sailonline.org/windy/run/334/#app=423b&6f4b-selectedIndex=3). I myself do not make videos but I can and do appreciate the efforts of others. Good choice of music.

I enjoyed the perspective. Skating and filming pretty neat. Very enjoyable video ! I added it to a few groups for others to enjoy.

I would love to hear a little bit about how you shot this. I'm a complete newbie to camera technique for video and I was really taken with the smooth shots you achieved here.
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
This film was actually shot on my ice skates. First, you plan what you want to film. After that you build up speed on your ice skates and then you just let yourself glide over the ice. Holding the camera with one stretched arm in front of you absorbs most of the big movements, and of course I tried really hard to hold it steady :). Many shots were re-taken due to failure of doing so. Of course, just that won't make it so smooth. There is this brilliant feature in Final Cut Pro called Smoothcam, which filters out the movements to make it one smooth image. I actually think this could be even smoother when using a steadycam, but I'm already quite satisfied with this result.
    Thanks!

And completely unrelated to the technique of the video, I'm very curious what preparation goes into storing boats in or on the water as is seen about 27 seconds into the video. Surely just leaving them in the water would lead to damage so they must do something?
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
Honestly, I didn't know anything about preparing a boat for the winter, so I did some research on it. The body of the boat is usually made from polyester and it turns out that this material will adjust to the temperature of the fluid water, which is above the freezing point. So the body won't get below zero quickly, and winters don't get extremely cold in The Netherlands. So, the body being above the freezing point will prevent the ice around the boat from becoming very thick. There's no such thing as tide where the boats were stored, wind won't play a large role in the boat's movement so the boats are barely moving, which makes it safe to leave them into the water.
  • Timon 1 year ago
Also normal physics will suggest that in a case of thick ice around the boat, the boat will be pushed upwards by the touching surface of the boat which has a less than vertical angle. This will prevent it from breaking its hull. Arctic sailing ships are constructed this way, besides of the extra internal reinforcements.

Gorgeous video! What is the lovely music? Is it from something or is it original?
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
    Paul Reeves - Ice Dance.

Not a very famous music producer, I had actually never heard of him. His music has probably been used in some films, although I don't know which one.
    Thank you.

    Really lovely video.

Regarding your camera, delicate as it is, how do you handle going from warm to bitter cold? Slowly chill and keep it chilled?
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
I don't see any problems going from warm to cold. Or I misunderstood your question.
  • stark 1 year ago
I guess I've always been careful (paranoid?) about condensation occurring from warm internal parts getting cold in a hurry. Perhaps it hasn't been a problem for you. Thanks for the speedy reply.
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
No, I haven't had any problems with condensation. Could have very easily occured, now when I think about it.

I'll be in Amsterdam in 3 weeks- will it still be cold and frozen enough to skate?
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
Quite unlikely. What you see in the video was 2 weeks ago. Now it's pretty much all gone. There might be a small change that it'll start to freeze again, but weather forecast for the next week is all pretty much above the freezing point.
Maybe late february will give us some ice, that's what happened 2 years ago. No guarantee, this was already quite exceptional ;)

just a question wich type of lenses did you use??? Canon L type lenses or just a regular lense ??? and did you adjust the WB and the CB in the camera or was all pos-production in FCP ???
    Good work :p
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
    It's just a cheap-ass 10-20mm lens. :)
I did some slight light adjustments in the post production, but the light was already wonderful.
    Thanks!

  • Thanks for this beautiful video, Kasper. You mentioned numerous failed shots. It's inspiring, even to pros, to be reminded that good video require a good number of failed shots, and great video require a great number of failed shots. :-)

I was intrigued by the snow sweeper. I've never seen anything like it in Canada, and I thought we had every tool ever invented for snow...

    Hello Kasper,
Gorgeous video - but hey I have a question. Did you actually shoot in slo-mo (is there a slo-mo mode on the camera) or did you turn it in slow motion in post-prod?
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
It was shot in slow motion.
Recorded with 60 frames per second. Slowed down to 40%, so to 24 fps. That's one of the amazing features of the 550D.
    Thanks!

i really love your work, although there is one little thing i find disappointing, and thats when you skate towards some kids playing ice hockey, you can see your shadow.... Hee Kasper,

    Timon
  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago
    Hoi Timon,

  • Kasper Bak 1 year ago

Yeah, Kasper.... it's a lovely film!

I love the music, but it's a different version than the one I've heard. Yours has no piano in it, and the one i'm familiar with has more emphasis on the piano. In the end, I prefer your version of Reeves more. was that off the album "Life in Motion" ?

I also don't know that having your shadow is too much of a blemish as mentioned earlier. For one, it makes you (the viewer) believe like you're that person.... . Also, I love that each sequence builds one after another. It feels like it's building with the music. Nice :)
