My visit of Aziziye Mosque / Astra Cinema by Suzan Dennis
1 year ago
DVD-Pal; Great Britain 2009; 4 min 42
Voice (English and Turkish): Suzan Dennis
The work combines a video piece by Suzan Dennis (Deniz Soezen’s British alter ego) with a facade of up to 140 hand-painted ceramic tiles. The bi-lingual narrative of the video is based on an encounter with Turkish women in front of Aziziye Mosque, who had approached Suzan Dennis, when she was taking photographs of the building, which is covered with traditional Turkish-style tiles. The building used to be a cinema until 1983 and then was converted into a mosque serving the local (Turkish) Muslim community. The building, which always had domed features on each side of its entrance, was not really
changed during its conversion into a mosque. It was made to look like a purpose built mosque, only through the decorative façade of traditional Turkish tiles.
