2. Cinematograph HD Video Work log
This is my video work log documenting the build of my latest case mod, the Cinematograph HD. The Cinematograph HD is a complete, easily transportable, HD editing system. It features 2 22" monitors, desktop speakers, and full sized computer components, which include : 5 3.5" Hard drives, full ATX motherboard, full sized graphics, full sized PSU, and even a full sized optical drive. Additionally, the case houses a wireless keyboard and mouse for transport, so the only cable required is a standard PC power connector.

Where are the ports? (USB, FireWire, Network...)
This mod could have used a webcam, Wifi, and more ports, and a card reader perhaps.
Other than that, this is the most amazing mod I have ever seen with a amazing video to match!

  • Will Urbina 3 years ago
Hey, thanks. The Ports are accessed by tipping the machine back the same way I do to get the they stored keyboard and mouse. This way they are protected and the internal wont be visable. There are plenty of usb and firewire ports, and even an HDMI 1080p capture card. Webcam video isnt really this things MO. There is also quite a few free pci/pci xpress slots free for any sort of upgrades.

VERY nice stuff man. Its always fun watching how-its-made processes like this. How many hours of welding went into this, by the way?

DIY is the way to go!

Words cannot express how much respect I've got for you at this time. I've arrived at this video straight from Engadget where your system was featured. I was impressed just from the image - it's something I've always wanted to do (even if I have to admit my plans only involved 1 screen, you've got 2!!) but then your video production is just as amazing as the case mod itself. I've downloaded the Quicktime HD version of this for times when I want to get inspired cuz Will, you're pretty much incredible at what you do. (sweet car and other case mods and stuff too - yeah, I checked out your homepage)

I would say this is the best case mod I've ever seen. The documentation is very cool also. I have a question though. When you tilt the machine backwards to get the keyboard, is there a risk of it tipping over?
  •
  • Will Urbina 3 years ago
Thanks guys, this is very cool. Check out moddingcomp.custompc.co.uk/ , cinematograph HD is currently competing over there, but theres some other pretty cool mods as well. @Nate the last sequence I actually just did in Premiere. Really wanted to finish up the project as I got a few other things going on right now, so didnt have time to do real cleanly in afx. and @Winson. You do have to be a bit carful when tiping it back, but It goes back all the way and can rest on its back if you want to plug stuff in or switch things around.

    Will,

    Awesome, awesome work.

One question though...how much does it weigh?
  •
  • Kyle Mallory 3 years ago
Will, absolutely amazing mod. I want one for myself! What do you edit and shoot with?
  •
  • Will Urbina 3 years ago
Ok, Just put it on the scale. Drumroll........... 82lbs! One important thing to realize is that most of that is the components. The 2 stripped down panels in particular. I dont know how or have the equipment to weld aluminum, but actually working with this I realize had the case itself wieghed any less, the system would have tipped over when swinging out the other monitor. Zero compromize was the most important thing here. Luckly I am able to carry it and lift it up onto a table, But just in case thats why it has those heavy duty handles and that abs piece of plasitc on the bottom to slide it around.
    @kyle I primarily use Premiere cs3 and I shoot with a Sony V1U.

Just caught this via Gizmodo. I have to say this is the most amazing case mod I've seen, and the video/editing totally makes it hands down the best. Great work!

Someday, I want to grow up to be like you. Very nice case and beautiful video. I now realize the effort needed to create a truly unique case and someday I will make something too.

Great Machine! Did you use a dof adaptor lense on this? How much did this cost you and what would you charge for something like this? Thanks.
  • Will Urbina 3 years ago
Thanks, I did not use a dof adapter on this. It was shot with a Sony V1u and a few shots I used some Close up lenses, and also a cheap reynox fish eye at some points. I think the cost was around 1200, but other than the HDMI capture and bluray burner The hardware inside was handed down from my primary machine (I hope to upgrade it soon.) Sorry, I Just build theses things for myself.

So the question I have is, how much did it cost to make the rotating white box? That's totally awesome.

And I dig the welding. It's nice to think of a device like that... and then have the tools to make it.
I bet it feels pretty good.
  • Will Urbina 3 years ago
I have a small turntable for the small stuff, but for the whole cinematograph I had to build a turntable from scratch. It's actually just the rotating base from an old bar stool, and you cant see it but im turning it by hand. Cost = $0.

cheers man! its nice to see that welding is not a dying art.

    Awesome.
    Just awesome.
And I refer to both the mod itself and your video, excellent production skills in both.
10 minutes that had me mesmerised and not wanting to fast forward.
And as others have said, inspirational.

Hope you win the competition, I see you're currently in joint first place.

Did you design this in cad or anything, or was it all by hand? I'd love to see more detail on the hinges and wire routing between the two halves. This is awesome, and I would love to build a similar one for myself, in a year or two after I learn how to weld and use any sort of CAD.
  • Will Urbina 3 years ago
Thanks. The previs was pretty much just me positioning the components on the floor until I came up with a configuration I liked. No cad, no pen and paper, I pretty much just started working. As for the hinges i don't think I have anything that shows them better than the vid. I decided on simply making a larger version of the design I found on my laptop. If you don't mind voiding warrantees that a good way to get ideas.

That was incredible. I'd love to be able to do this kind of stuff one day.

I love it!!!!! this case would be great for many applications, and it's beautiful as well.
Great job, also enjoyed the video, I'm downloading the HD video now, and will be studying it in order to plan one out. I'm thinking either Aluminium or Stainless Steel.

    Congrats!

You need a TIG welder, its so much better for the type of work you do... I like this mod, I might have to do something similar!
  • CJ 2 years ago
Also, with TIG, welding aluminum is just a matter of changing the shielding gas from argon to helium... but since aluminum is soft, it takes a LOT of practice to get sexy welds and not holes... XD

Came across this while checking out your Black Dwarf.

I actually thought of making something like this a couple of years ago after seeing similar pre-built computers made by Logic Instruments -
    logic-instrument-us.com/

It also reminds me of a microwave case mod I saw somewhere.

82lbs is a lot. Surely the steel frame and diamond plate don't help. I can understand the need for a large monitor (I couldn't live without my 24inch). But have you considered upgrading this project with an aluminum frame, something lighter than the awesome looking diamond plate, and only a single monitor?

Shave thirty pounds off and you could include a large battery system.
