The nearer the center the excitation, the more the purely circular modes predominate until at the exact center only circular modes are produced. The circular modes lose energy more rapidly than the other modes. This explains why kettledrums produce a shorter, duller sound when struck at the center, and a longer, brighter sound near the rim.
