This DVD presents the Mawlid of al-Barzanji, one of the classics of traditional Islamic culture. It is a sung celebration of the birth and greatness of the Holy Prophet Muhammad s, traditionally recited on the anniversary of his birth.
Giving thanks for the Holy Prophet is an obligation in Islam; and in this work, Imam Ja’far al-Barzanji (d.1764), a scholar of Kurdish origin who was born and studied in Madina, has given the world the most popular of all recitals of the Prophetic birth.
This recording of the Mawlid al-Barzanji was made in Cape Town, with the celebrated Mawlid Jama’at of the Al-Zawiya Mosque, under the direction of Shaykh Seraj Hendricks, formerly Chair of the Fatwa Committee of Cape Town.
