101. Arizona shooting: Memorial to Tucson victims
1 year ago
Residents of Tucson gather outside the hospital where the wounded survivors of Saturday's assassination attempt on Gabrielle Giffords joined a moment of silence called by President Obama. Some blame the increasingly belligerent tone of America's political discourse for the shooting. Others simply wondered what it meant for their country. Video by Dan Chung.

Good job on this video. Who is going around telling people to kill others? If anyone wants to find blame with someone other than the shooter, you have to blame the media outlets since they allow these crazy discussions to be broadcast all over. We intentionally stay away from TV and radio talk shows because all sides can be way too extreme in their rhetoric, even if they do not intend anyone harm. There are sick people all over the place, and it only takes a certain debate or issue to bring these people to act senselessly.

Freedom of speech is powerful, make sure you can handle the rhetoric and be impartial.

This as I tweeted Dan is a very powerful piece. Letting the people speak freely showed feelings and emotion around this tragedy. A fine piece of reporting and a different angle to current UK TV news media.

Beautifully sensitive video Dan. The part that I personally related to was the girl at 2.24, saying that when she was younger, the world seemed so much less scary, and that it was a surprise how things turned out as she became an adult... very sad. All this violence is unnecessary.

As for the events themselves... words fail me. Thoughts firmly with the victims and families.

great low pressure interviews. the feel was at times somewhat like overhearing a conversation.
  • I very much agree! Wonderful job, Dan. I really appreciated the pacing and timing of this piece. Very difficult subject matter requires a slower pace, I think.

Thoughts and prayers with all those folks.

  • Beautiful reporting Dan. Masterfully done.

    Hi,

I went to Tucson in September to shoot a musicvideo with Amparo Sanchez and Calexico.

In this video, there are many places and beautiful people that live in Tucson, and also in the rest of Arizona.

That was for me a super rich experience, what happened with the shooting made me sad.

I would like to dedicate this humble work to all Tucson citizens.

    Viva Arizona !

this is what the VDSLR revolution is about, grass roots journalism & real stories from real people, not that homogenized crap on the big networks.

My hat is off to you!
  • AVCHD User 1 year ago
This is not grassroots journalism, he works for Guardian. As for VDSLR revolution and homogenized crap, here you get the same homogenized series of shallow DOF, focus pulls and slow slider moves as in any other VDSLR video.

Have you watched television/news lately? LOL thats what THEY ALL DO! VDSLR is just mimicking professional video.

    Crawl back into your whole......TROLL.

Beautiful movie: painful, thoughtful. Nice blend of still and moving images. Also I admire the clarity and distance the camera had to the kids. It felt respectful. I'll be sharing this link, Dan.

Very touching and well balanced. You gave time for each person's response. Nice to actually feel a report and not just a condensed assessment forced down our throats. Very well handled.

This is what news should be! Thoughts from people actually affected by the event not some "professional" that just wants to hear them self talk. Great job!

Great piece of work on a delicate issue, as it deals with it in a respectful style when people are interviewed. This is the way TV news should report these events, but, unfortunately, it is not.

This is deeply moving and beautifully realized. I've got to ask, though, because it works so well: what's the focal length on the lens you're using in those handheld interviews?

Touching and heartfelt. A great video, well made and shot beautifully.

Ultimately though, the real question is when will America wake up to the reality that the legalisation of firearms is a both a sad and disgraceful existence?
