I decided to shot this 50 second Lumiere video as a criticism about the education system in Turkey. Also i believe that most countries has got the same problem.

I saw my little brother studying one day and he was going mad about something. I wonder what’s going on with him and checked his homework because there’s no one else in home. At first, his school book has bringed back my childhood memories. I saw that nothing has changed since i was in elemantary school. Still everything is based on how can students memorize the informations. It made me sad and i decided to shot this for the Lumiere Project.

Actually, it’s a very ironic topic too. I remember that everybody’s unhappy about the education system in Turkey when i was a child. And now, they’re still unhappy but no one does anything about it! Everything has changed about this country and there are few things that they couldn’t change or fix and the education system is one of them. It’s only about memorizing the information, doing the exam well and forgetting all about it. And because of this, most of us were educated in a wrong way and still most of the childs are being educated in that wrong way all over again.

Okay, i must admit that at some point students has to memorize some things. But not everything. Because everything that being memorized by every student are things that they’re ready to forget. I mean, if the student is not a curious person about what he’s/she’s studying, in his/her whole life in education is an empty life. Because in the end, they can’t learn nothing.

In this video, at first we saw my little brother studying and then he gives up. When he disappears from the camera, i come in to the scene as his older version and i start to study. The message that i wanted to give is nothing ever changes in time. In this scenario, it’s obviously about the education system but we can think about everything. We have our routine, we have our rules and even the world changes everyday, actually we won’t change a bit. We invent lots of things to make life easier, like cars, cell phones etc. but the real life, the life that has certain rules in society, never changes.
So we can do 2 readings. One of them is very superficial and it’s about the education system and the another one is a general reading about life and society.
