This is a university video-project made by "Game Design"-students from munich.
Done in a single-shot fashion...well almost single shot =)
The film covers different eras of the video-game history.

Took us a week to organise the various props (controllers, monitors. lighting, camera, etc.), two whole days to film and several days of postproduction.
It isn't perfect, but hopefully fun to watch nevertheless ,)

Games:
Tennis for Two, Oscilloscope, 1958
Pacman, Arcade, 1980
Donkey Kong, NES, 1986
Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, 1991
Street Fighter II. SNES, 1991
Super Mario 64, Nintendo 64, 1996
Final Fantasy VII, Sony Playstation, 1997
Need for Speed: Hot Pursiut 2, Sony Playstation 2, 2002
Ecco the Dolphin, Sega Dreamcast, 2000
Super Smash Bros. Melee, Nintendo Game Cube, 2001
Wii Sports Golf, Nintendo Wii, 2006
God of War III, Sony Playstation 3, 2010
Rock Band, XBox 360, 2008
Rock Band Song: "Social Code" by Satisfied

Credits Music:
"Luminous" by Geir Tjelta

By:
Moritz Freyer
Fabian Steiner
Florian Smolka
Lucas Reiner

Additional Special Thanks To:
Lena Hartl for having the guts to lend us her cam =)

Comments appreciated

Thanks for watching! Keep on gaming...

//EDIT:
We're quite aware that we could have used more games or different games but we just wanted to show a small insight into the history of videogames that just shows how far we've come and where our roots are buried.
A small FAQ:
There are Playstation 1,2 and 3 devices, just pay close attention or read the credits =)
I noticed that many of you are missing the XBox and Halo on it. It was planned but my friend with the controller called me just before the day of the shooting and said he couldn't find it =( Sorry
Ecco and the dreamcast were mainly meant to show a flop in game history (please don't kill me for saying that =) ! If you have a different opinion on this one it's cool. We don't mean to insult anyone).
Why didn't we just cover...everything?!—due to the limited time that we had for this project it was hard enough to gather all controllers and output devices we used. And we're quite aware that it's not always the best possible combination of game pad and monitor =)
We didnt use XBox Kinect or Playstation Move because the technology isn't new.
And remember this is (almost) a one-shot (= no cuts used) => the more games/controllers, the harder it gets—one mistake and you can start over.
We captured a total of 45takes.
If you're interested visit vimeo once in a while, we're up to make a little "Making Of".

nice =) didn't know about that one.
  • joely 11 months ago
I played Space War on a PDP-12 in 1971. Our lab's hardware wizard, Mo Miller, wired up two joysticks with firing buttons. Before that, we'd used the analog knobs on the computer itself to vary the orbits. ( I don't recall how we fired the photon torpedoes before the joysticks). The problem was, Mo had such good reflexes he annihilated everyone else very quickly, so people lost the desire to play.

Awesome video, just ONE thing lol. I wouldn't consider the DreamCast a flop simply because of one game... SHENMUE. Possibly one of the best games I've ever played. I literally bought the console for that.
  • Florian Smolka 1 year ago
Have to try that some time =)
  • Patrick Watkins 1 year ago
I agree. Shenmue was totally groundbreaking and such a shame it went under the radar.

Great video by the way! Really enjoyed it!

it's a nice enough video but... atari, master system, neo geo, saturn, xbox? i know it's not easy to gather all of those, but at least atari and master system needed to be there.
  •
  • QuDDel 1 year ago
Coole Idee. Master System II und Tetris (!) fehlen mir unbedingt. Atari 2600 ebenso mit Fogger oder dem Boxspiel. C64 mit Stunts. Game Boy und Game Gear könnten auch noch etwas Abwechslung reinbringen.
    Ansonsten toll gemacht :)

I dig the concept, but the content was lacking. Atari, Colecovision, Texas Instruments...all of these are missing. You also present a few systems which are all the same generation (I think it was the Dreamcast and PSX/2, also SNES and Sega Genesis). These are not advancements in technology. No XBox, either (but that's been stated)?

I also think the ending was a bit cheesy. Virtual Reality is something that has been around for some time, and gaming has passed it by. The ending could've afforded to be a bit more...mind-bending.

I think it was a clever concept, but the script was disjointed and incongruent in several places.
  •
  • Bernard Lau 1 year ago
good work guys, great concept and I'm surprised nothing like this has turned up yet on the internet.
i'm sure someone or one of the big gaming sites with the budget would do a similar thing and include every gaming system, from PC to consoles to hand held.

Will augmented reality be a new medium for gaming? Possibly. Imagine just wearing glasses (or even digital contacts!) that show a HUD and holding a controller around. You might not even need to hold a controller as the HUD will recognise your hands and place whatever game object you're playing, like a sword, gun, ball etc.

This is a fantastic video which speaks to how important videogaming has been across generations. I applaude your efforts. Insertcoin(s) (insertcoinsLV.com) is a new videolounge gamebar coming to Las Vegas which captures the spectrum of videogaming from old to new.

The end music is called Luminous and was composed by Geir Tjelta & Trond Lindanger in 1989 on Commodore64. You can grab the original SID version on HSVC (hvsc.de) or the MP3 version on SOASC (6581-8580.com). By the way, Geir Tjelta is still composing musics for C64 and recently (2009) released a new real-time delay technique that seems impossible ten years ago. A real genius.

Great, but I think you missed the oportunity of making that room look like it was part of an augmented reality game using motion tracking!
If you used markers on the walls you could've made some "status text" appearing on them. At first glance when I spotted the text there I thought it was gonna be it, but it's just the decoration of the room or whatever that's called.
