During the fall of 2000, three friends and I explored the Parkwood Psychiatric Hospital in Atlanta.
As far as we knew, this hospital was abandoned in 1996, but somehow still had power in most of the facility. It was rumored that the patients that had nowhere to go were released to the streets.
Many areas of the hospital looked as if they literally just got up and left... leaving behind all sorts of patient records, documents, and equipment.
Unaware that anyone might be inside the facility, we naively made our way through the hospital (unarmed). Someone, obviously living inside, silently followed us through the hospital, marking where we had been with various notes/notecards on the floor.
Enrolled at the Atlanta College of Art at the time, we decided to document our time inside the hospital with pictures and video for use in various school projects.
This is the raw footage that I shot on Hi-8.
Parkwood Hospital was demolished several years ago. An apartment complex was built in it's place.
