76. 100,000 starlings fill the skies in Poole - 1 Minu…
1 year ago
*** longer video in HD vimeo.com/19331820 ***

A fantastic natural phenomenon is filling the skies over Sterte every night as around 100,000 starlings form a black cloud.

This amazing sight over Poole as the light fades is attracting scores of bird watchers and photographers, all of whom are keen to capture the starling spectacle.

Last winter there were around 20,000 to 30,000 birds wheeling around the sky but this year the flock has grown enormously as more and more birds join in.

Very nice capture seeing as you're not allowed to move the camera. They behaved well!

The view is so perfect that I hardly can believe it is real. While watching I was tempted to think that this could be some kind of animation or done through visual effects.
  • Mark Rigler plus 1 year ago
I know what you mean, it dosen't look "real" when your watching it through the window

This is awesome. I work with some scientists who are studying these animals (and also fish). The stuff I do with robotics is related to flocking and schooling. We're trying to get engineered systems to be capable of doing this stuff.

This guy is a leading researcher in studying decision making in animal groups like the starling flock: icouzin.princeton.edu/

Sweet! Bump the exposure a bit and then use Twixtor to slow it down.
  • Mark Rigler plus 1 year ago
Cheers, not sure about txitor, it might look like a blurry mess. I shot at F2.8 1/30 1600 iso. A few minutes later is was dart. I think I'd need a much faster shutter speed to get a good result with Twixtor
