2. Night Of The Zombie Chicken, an animated short by …
1 year ago
This is the final version of the student reel I made over 6 months at The Vancouver Film School in 2010. I had an absolute blast making this, and loved every minute of the process thanks to extremely helpful faculty and friends.

Enjoy and PLEASE let me know what you think!

(all modeling, texturing, rigging and animation by me, Steven Blomkamp. 2D start and end titles by the extremely talented Daniel Ruiz)

best animation of your class.... And the longest haha., here we come 3D90 haha
  • Steven Blomkamp plus 1 year ago
Thanks Fernando! what stream are you going into again?
  • Fernando Centurion 1 year ago
I want to go for VFX but who knows haha... I also like animation, but after the reels I saw at the grad I just got more confused, like the one of "doodles"... maybe modeling it´s also an option haha.... I think u can come up with an amazing reel for any of those three, It depends on how much you put, I guess...

you'll find as time goes on that one stream will just feel more natural to you. Pay attention to the feedback you get from mentors and peers, it isn't always an obvious choice.

Looking forward to seeing your work!

    Great character design!
  • Steven Blomkamp plus 1 year ago
Thanks Underdog, I had a lot of fun with the concepts. I'll be posting a making of on my website soon, there were a few designs initially. I have the mentors at The Vancouver Film School to thank for guiding me as I was finalizing my characters, they really know what they are doing there.

I like the lighting and the characters as well. A little more detailed texture in the skin of the chef would look even greater. Good work!

I totally agree, but my texturing skills are lacking so I decided to try minimize the amount of work surrounding that, and focus on other areas. It's unfortunate, because knowing what I know now I could probably have pushed it way further. Thank you for your feedback, Polo

I liked it a lot from start to finish. Well done, keep it up! I especially liked the animation of the broken neck. The chicken model was awesome, my favorite part due to me being a modeler myself. Best of luck to you!!
  • Steven Blomkamp plus 1 year ago
Thanks James! yeah, I'm more of an animator than a modeler, so I appreciate the fact that you think the modeling works.

This is SO entertaining it's unbelievable! The only thing i think it lacks is the main character expressions, sometimes i just think he could be more expressive, you know.
Overall everything is really well made and i had a real blast watching it and even caught myself laughing during it's lenght, congratulations and best of luck in future works.
  • Steven Blomkamp plus 1 year ago
Yeah, i hear what you are saying. I learnt a lot from this project, so next time I'll remember to push the acting further. Thank you for the feedback, Ronaldo :)

Haha I love the twist! If it's supposed to be a twist. Great work. So cool.
  • Steven Blomkamp plus 1 year ago
thank you. The twist is kinda hard to read, i know what you mean. I had a hard time implementing it, a lot of people dont see the extra chickens in the opening shot in the food warmer, so they dont expect the twist. Thanks for the feedback, Ryan :)

Hey steven, congratulations on your work!
I know how long you took to do this (at leat I can imagine :) ). I do some 3D stuff too, it's my passion. And I know what you mean when you say that you've enjoyed every minute of this process. So I might say that you'll become an excellent animator :D
You have the skills and the passion!

    keep it up,
    best regards!
  • Steven Blomkamp plus 1 year ago

You're welcome and thank you too. Well I have a lot of projects in mind, but I have a performance problem, I seriously need to invest in a good computer, otherwise things will not come out as I wish.
I'll see what I can get
In the future I'll add some new stuff, and share it with you
