DietsInReview.com Senior Editor Brandi Koskie explains the new Overall Nutritional Quality Index, ONQI. This new food ranking index was created by Yale's Griffin Research Center in an effort to help consumers quantify the nutritional value of the more than 45,000 items in our grocery stores using this simple system.
An index score of 100 indicates a wholly nutritional food, while a score of 1 indicates a lack of nutritional quality. Fresh produce like blueberries, strawberries and spinach rank with 100; non-fat milk 91, pasta 50, peanut butter 23, hotdogs 5 and candy or soda 1.
