See all Show me
This is Larry. This is somewhere between point A and point B. Where ever it is... I miss it. I miss kneeling on-top of the van, working the crane, watching Larry push through the wind. Knowing that every mile meant something to him... something people wouldn't see passing by in their cars. Something subtle.

    God Damn Mike.
You're gonna make me cry man. I miss the wind of North Dakota. I miss seeing you surf on top of the van, making faces at Amanda when I was safely out of frame, and being no where and on top of the world at the same time.

Glad you like it :) This shot goes on for quite a while... I'm sure it's boring to most anyone else, but I could watch it all day...

Just tell me how you got that shot from bike level to above like a Helicopter shot. I know you didn't get a helicopter on this shoot. Nice to see a POV from ground level to Bird level.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey DaVinci :) We had attached a big crane-arm to the top of the van... so I'm just up there working the crane while Amanda kept pace. The arm would drop down to about 3 feet, and raise up to around 35 :)

I always like to see the behind the scenes. Do you have any pictures of your installation on the car ?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Remyyy :) Okay, I found two pics on my flickr of the crane on the van... although, as you can see, both of these are when it was strapped down.

The short end that is sticking up is where the weights went and also where I held on...

The long end has a platform (that kinda blends in with my bike in this pic) that the cam sat on...

Have you used the Cine SaddleCam, that is what we use a lot.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks Rex :) No, I've never used one of those before. I'll have to check it out.

It's peaceful, yet introspective. Exciting but not flashy and as smooth as butter. Really does seem like he'll be out there, alone, for thousands more miles.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Zack :) Thanks! I'm sure if Larry had the choice he would happily be out there for a few more thousand miles ;)

    Awesome!

If I remember correctly you rented the van. If so, I bet that wasn't something they planned on happening to their vehicle while being rented. Very cool!
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Ashley :) Yea, it was a rental - so I'm sure they wouldn't be happy to know I was up there filming. Actually we build a whole sandbox-like platform up there. Mu ha ha...

looks great! what did you shoot with?

Also, did you adjust this aspect ratio in post? or is it native to the camera?
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Thanks :) This was shot on a Sony Z1u with a wide on it...

And the cam' shoots in native 16x9, so the timeline is 1080i anamorphic, which is cropping everything at 2.35x1...

This is one of the most beautiful shots I've seen. Your work is absolutely amazing, between this and the jellyfish you have captivated me and are a huge inspiration for me to take the leap from photography to film. Keep it up mike.

Also what is thename of this song.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Wow. Thanks Colin. I... don't know what to say... I never thought I'd have anyone ever say *that* to me :)

This song is called 'Tarnation' by Max Avery Lichtenstein... it's the theme song to a really touching film made by a guy on his mac when the first version of iMovie came out. Crazy stuff.

  • Men i'm loving your work. I'm still wondering how can i see your film in Argentina. I don't want to miss it. If you have time see my videos, i think we have the same good taste. How do you work the smooth cam? Do you shoot with a GyroStabilizer? Or you use a Smooth cam filter in Final Cut Pro? Thanks Again man. Suerte!!
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Suerte :) Thanks a lot. You'll be able to watch anywhere, we're going to put it up online for free when it's finished. I used to have a glidecam rig... but I just use the FCP filter these days... this shot was on a crane strapped to the top of our van, so it didn't have too much shake to begin with.

I'll be sure to check out your stuff :) Thanks for the comment.

  • This is actually the first trailer I saw of the project and ever since I have been hooked. I myself am planning a trip for summer 2009 from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine. This project has only made me more excited for what I am sure will be the experience of lifetime. Thanks.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 1 year ago
Hey Joshua :) Thanks for this comment - and thanks a lot for signing up for the email list. I'm very flattered that this grabbed your attention and the project has held it :) Hope to see you around a bunch on Vimeo and the blog, and don't forget to send in a bunch of your footage from your trip to Stockpile! :) Great to hear from you.

Amazing shot. Stirs up everything I love about cycling. It's almost flying, just like the camera on the end of that crane.
  • mike ambs ☂ plus 11 months ago
Thanks so much Obscura :) I miss the road so much when I watch this shot... makes me want to get on a bike and ride.
