In 1964, Lyndon Johnson needed pants, so he called the Haggar clothing company and asked for some. The call was recorded (like all White House calls at the time), and has since become the stuff of legend. Johnson’s anatomically specific directions to Mr. Haggar are some of the most intimate words we’ve ever heard from the mouth of a President.

We at Put This On took the historic original audio and gave it to animator Tawd Dorenfeld, who created this majestic fantasia of bungholiana.

Enjoy this special treat from Put This On: LBJ Orders Pants. Then share it with a friend who loves pants.

"It's like riding a wire fence." -- My favorite line.
  • That was the point where I literally laughed out loud. God, I salute LBJ. Such a great pants wearing man.

It is all 100% real. I edited it, but only for time.

A buddy brought up a good question: Who's funeral was he going to? Was it JFK? Was he belching and ordering custom pants on his way to bury America's innocence?
  • Well, not to be insensitive, but I think we all like to have a bit of levity before and after a funeral, no matter whose it is.

Didn't mean that to sound so wounded / sanctimonious. Mostly I just think the historical context would be pretty amazing...hearing the behavior of those in power after some craziness like a presidential assassination. I mean, we get the sound bytes and the "It's a tragic event" but to then hear the rising President just worrying about his pants is pretty....whoa.

I don't know who the funeral was for, but it wasn't JFK. The date on the recording is August 8, 1964, and JFK was buried in 1963.

Thanks for the info...didn't see a date mentioned anywhere.

Not sure if I'm relieved or bummed. Ha!

It wasn't exactly a funeral, it was a private memorial for Gen. Douglas MacArthur which was held with his family at the 7th Regiment Armory, before he was moved to the Capitol building to lie in State.

Wow. Neat to know that. Thanks!

I think this just further proves that LBJ had JFK killed.

Think about it: Funerals are a great excuse for pants!

No, but seriously, he had JFK killed.

Best Presidential use of the term bunghole ever...or at least until Clinton's calls start turning in to Vimeo videos.

I can't hear. Any way to get a transcript of this? I'd love to be able to read what LBJ said. Thanks!

I just realized how much I miss LBJ. He moved to Washington but he was all Texas (country) and real. I used to work for GTE which maintained the communication shack at LBJ ranch (Texas Whitehouse). Lady Bird woudn't let him keep beer in the house so he stored it in a fridge in the comm shack. The only problem was the communincation workers would drink it all up and forget to restock it. One day LBJ came to the shack and found no cold beer. He reemed out pretty good to say the least and after that there were no more incidents of no cold beer. He would sit out there with the phone guys and visit from time to time. He was a himself! Thanks for sharing this and animating it so well!
