Moving shots done with an 8' Kessler Crane. Continuing in the tradition of the previous few films. It's the idea of penetrating the walls we build up around ourselves.

Canon XHA1/Letus Ultimate combo.

That was simply lovely, Steven. The crane shots are just so cinematic and the waterfall breathtaking. Good narration, too.

(And when you've finished playing with the Kessler, pass it over here, would you?)
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I don't think so, Greg, but thanks for asking just the same.

    Hey Steve,
Which Kessler Crane package are you using? Are you happy with the product? Thanks.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
Yes, I love my Kessler Crane. Super easy to set up and easy to transport around. It's rock solid too. Highly recommended.

    Steven,

Umm.. wow. Love those moving shots. Ditto to what Greg said.

Added your video to Video Of The Day channel. Hope that's okay.

    That's fine, thanks.

Really loved the moving shots! It added a new dimension to your work! Was a crane used?
    Thanks for sharing!
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
Thanks Scott, take a look at the description at the top.

Whoops! I got so engrossed by the footage I forgot to look at the text!

  • James Kanka 1 year ago
Beautiful! Did you try pulling focus on the crane?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
    See below.
  •
  • wow this footage is great... I have a similar question as James above me, but rather I was wondering if you had someone else pulling focus?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
Being just one guy working this whole rig, the pulling focus thing is just too much. I tried it with limited success but it affected the fluidity of the camera movement. I can do it for smaller moves but big sweeping ones....forget about it. I avoid the whole mess by keeping my lens set to about f8. That way, I have a fairly broad depth of field to work with and, hence, it's more forgiving.

The way to do it with two people would be to have someone working a remote follow focus from the ground and the other person operating the jib.

The shot that was timed with the dialogue, "through an artists eye" was beautiful. Great work. :)

awesome! is "an artist eye" something you wrote? beautiful! you always seem to say what i can't put into words. then you turn it into an awesome video.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
    Thank you...yes, I wrote it.

May I ask where you get your music? Your soundtracks to "An Artists Eye" and "An Uncluttered World" are excellent and I would be interested in finding similar music for projects of my own.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
My music is from various sources, killertracks.com, APM music, and I also work directly with a composer, Glenn Scott Lacey. This particular piece is from APM.

This is not free music and can get pretty expensive depending on the usage.

  • Matt Turner 1 year ago
I was just going to ask the same question about the music. You rarely find royalty free music to that caliber. Any hints on where to look?

That was one of your best yet. And it's comforting to see I'm not the only Dub abroad who's losing his accent! The Letus has arrived, the Zeiss lens is in the post, but I'm struggling to settle on a monitor within my budget. Which one do you use (if at all)?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
Hey Vinny, thanks for the comments. For little films like these, I don't use a monitor but for paying gigs I use the following: lcdracks.com/monitors/vr70phda.html

This is a really great little monitor....it's about $1400. Nothing is cheap in this game.
  • Vinny Flood 1 year ago
I'm delighted to hear that's the one you use and that you've had good experiences with it using a Letus and the XH-A1, as that's the one I've been looking at.

After reading everything, everywhere on monitors under $2k, the Marshall seems to be the best and most reasonably priced.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
Yeah, it's really robust and has never failed me. It's probably a good idea to buy a sunshade for it too. It's definitely difficult to see it in direct sunlight.

I liked this one a lot. The very first shot, I could've pictured it straight from a film: all that was missing was a battalion of knights trotting along :)

    Music?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
    Thank you :)

Regarding the music, see a few posts above.

  • I felt moved Steven after watching this beautiful film ... it might be short, but the message is so powerful (and dear to me) and the videography perfectly apt, that no more needs to be said ... its near devine!

If Jesus had a camera, this is the kind of film and message I'd expect to see ;-) - lovely film & concept.

Which Kessler do you have and any advice for configuring it up for an XH-A1? I've been toying with a rail, but it's too limiting. A crane looks like the answer I need to add some depth and interest and this piece makes the case pretty strong.

I'm also looking for a good low cost monitor. I've tried the DVD player route, but it isn't sharp enough over the stock monitor.

I just want to ask i am considering buying a 35mm adaptor as I have nikon lenses. Is brevis or sgpro better than letus? I read that the brevis has better image and manufactured solid. Please give me some insight.

    Steven,
So Impessive we all want to know what equipment you use! but of course it's the man behind the equipment who knows how to use it right!?
I was wondering which tripod head you use for the crane? and if it's the same one you use when your not using the crane. Thanks and keep up the inspiring work!

  • Hi Steven. Great footage, pity the xlcinema site went under was a great place. Could you tell me the sweet spot for the fstop on the xlh1? also is it better to stop down on the 35mm lens or the camera when outdoors and over exposed?

Cheers and keep up the great work.

The trouble with that line of thinking, IMO, is that you are assuming one can't really "get it" and live a full life until your latter years, when it's almost too late to reap the benefits. I think it has more to do with an open heart and not as much to do with how long we have been on this planet. That's kinda the point of this film.
