3. FROM STEEL: The Making of a Soulcraft
Filmmaker Michael John Evans sets out to visually portray “the zone” which one enters when their craft is honed.

Sean Walling, owner of Soulcraft, builds top notch custom steel bicycle frames. This short film documents Sean’s fabrication methods: a well choreographed dance of experience and muscle memory producing a seemingly effortless ode to process.
From Steel: invites the viewer into Sean’s machine shop for an up close and personal look at the work that results in yet another awesome Soulcraft.

Musical score provided by the internationally praised duo, Mattson 2. Courtesy of Galaxia Records.

Very nice...I shy awake from bikes since my accident (3rd grade hit a tree) but this was really well done so I may reconsider my position...kudos

    Simply EXCELLENT!

For 13 years, I've been riding "the same" Soulcraft Frame. And after 13 treks from San Francisco to Los Angeles, my Soulcraft is still running STRONG!

Thank you Mike Evans for backing a "SOLID PRODUCT!"
Thank you Sean for building exactly what I needed.
    BRAVO!

Thanks. I ride a single speed Soulcraft Hollyroller, hope to have it running as long as yours. Happy to share something I enjoy with who ever enjoys watching it.

Beautiful footage, well composed, nice pace.

Interested in the camera you used? Also, any problems with lighting in that environment?
  • michael evans plus 1 year ago
5D mark II... As for the lighting, it was a bit tricky. We would start shooting in the morning and work into the night. Almost every shot was a new lighting set up, as Sean uses different machines for each step of the build. Luckily it's a large workspace, and he was patient as I lugged all the lights into place every time he moved.

Well, being a cyclist and an occasional videographer, I found you nailed it. The visuals sucked me in and the story made me have a deeper appreciation of hand built bikes.

Michael...really, really well done and love the soundtrack as well. Great showcase of Sean's masterful work...which is impeccable. I have had my Holy Roller 29er for over 3 yrs now and it's the one bike I will nvr sell. It's my go-to for riding and racing.

    Beautiful.
The filming was excellent, really immersive!

On top of that, it was excellent start to finish, really engaging to see all of the work and tools that go into that. I love your process, probably one of the best, cleanest, and most interesting I have seen to date filmed.
    Beautiful.
    Cheers!

Amazing! What lights did you have in use for this?
  • michael evans plus 1 year ago
I have a modest collection of Lowel lights, different configurations for different shots. Also had to a fair amount of natural light in some areas of the shop, during the day that is.

As someone who rides a SS Holy Roller, of course I found this film interesting and watched it several times...but I have shared this with many folks who don't ride or have no interest in what goes on in a machine shop, of any sort, and they loved it. Truly a little gem to watch and listen to. Keep up the great work.

Wow this is beautiful. I love the music chosen for the film, and the subtle elements that show you his process. Like when he grabs his gloves, or puts on different masks. Well composed, and great mood. It's almost like bike porn! Well done.

Would have liked to seen more wide shots of the bike, especially after all that work was put into it. Also, it reminds me of a video I saw about a Japanese motorcycle maker who made custom motorcycles.

Love this film just perfect if only I could afford it I would love a Soulcraft single speed 29er. I just have to make do with a T shirt for now till the money comes along.
  •
  • Michael, you've crafted the imagery in such a beautiful way, that it came very close to the crafting of the hardware itself. A very deserving rendition to a great bike artist!

Wow, nice video! Well paced and interesting; I liked the soundtrack too. Great work Michael. I also admired Sean's shop and his craftsmanship; he clearly knows what he is doing. He's probably a very good sport for givng you time to set up the many angles
    you shot.
