19. Teradek Cube Streaming HD Video from a RC Helicopter
1 year ago
Teradek are partnering with Orange County based F-Stop Aerial Media, and New York based Livestream.com to develop a live-to-the-Internet HD streaming video solution for live event broadcasting. This video is from a successful test showing that Cube's WiFi radio does not interfere with the helicopter's control system.

This system can be used for live webcasts, and also filmmaking applications where the media is recorded in-camera, but the video is used for camera operating.

Two work flows are shown here. Video is transmitting from the Canon 7D via the Cube HDMI Encoder over WiFi. On the receiving side, a Cube HD-SDI Decoder is displaying video on a SmallHD handheld monitor making a small self contained monitoring rig. The second workflow is live video to the Web using Livestream, either directly from the Cube to Livestream using the new native integration, or through Telestream's Wirecast, allowing multiple cameras being mixed and edited live on a laptop before streaming to Livestream.

Teradek are manufacturers of Cube, the world's first camera-top HD video encoder. Cube streams HD video over WiFi locally or over the Internet.

F-Stop Aerial Media own and operate two purpose radio controlled helicopter camera platforms, and leaders in RC helicopter filmmaking.

Livestream is building a next-generation live cable operator. One that is global, social, user friendly, reaching all devices and accessible to anyone interested in broadcasting live video experience - for free.

I just want to fly the helicoptor. Too bad the 7D & 5D have a jello effect. They don't do well with movement or vibrations. Cool idea.

Great stuff. Any idea what the maximum distance the chopper can be from the controller before losing the signal?

General rule of thumb with all RC aircraft is 1 mile. However the practical limit is how far the pilot can see the aircraft (much less than a mile, something like 300-500 ft)

The captured image noise and vibration have a lot of this problem :(

The noise was from an errant ISO setting by the cameraman. The vibration only occurs during spin-up, and using higher shutter speeds (500-1000) eliminates the remaining shake. We're testing again today with correct ISO and the footage coming from the CF cards look gorgeous.

Good stuff. Similarly, Tim Pierce recently posted some video he shot (Chasing Gannets - RC Heli Filming vimeo.com/17506313 ) using a live feed from the heli-cam to a vr-head gear type set-up from New Zealand company, MediaMechanics. Looks awesome

when you get bored of this rig, just drop it off at my studio and I'll be happy to take it off your hands!

Wow I want one of those setups. How much does the helicopter rig cost?
  • David Aldrich plus 1 year ago
They probably have at least $10k into this heli after all the modifications, extra batteries, extra parts etc. A base unit will be in the $5 - $6k range.

What a great tool for site inspections.
The ability to record and distribute to others in real time could make it tremendously valuable to rescue teams, disaster recovery, and environmental cleanup.

PLZ HELP IVE BEEN RESEARCHING AND TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT FOR 4 DAYS

WOW what i wanna do seems so easy compared to what you guys have done here.

Hi I'm totally new to live streaming and I have a few questions I would like some professional advise on please.

I want to do the following :

I want to run a daily 35min live stream interview show.

I then want to take that footage and edit it to a snappy 15min vid and then post it to you tube.

So here are some of my questions and issues.

I want to shoot it with external camera and live feed to my PC to stream

What is better DSLR or camcorders for streaming ?
What will give me the most professional look?

Some people online has suggested camcorders are a dying breed and DSLR is the future but many don't know how they measure up with live streaming.

I currently have my eye on the Canon 60D bit.ly/bs6Al2
With Canon EOS 50mm/F1.8 Ef Lens (Mk11) amzn.to/bkot7w
    With RODE VIDEO MIC amzn.to/wftSrm
With Professional Softbox Studio Lighting Kit with 2x85w 5400K amzn.to/zaud11

Many people are singing the 60D praises but there is not much info out there on how it measures up for live streaming. Some even say the sensor over heats and camera shuts down after 30min in live view mode.

I have also read that with DSLR's there is no way to get a video stream and still see what you are doing. HDMI out shuts off the LCD...sends the LCD signal down the HDMI connection. So you'll be blind. Not only that, but the image isn't a clean one...it is the LCD display

Is this a good kit that I have put together ? Will it serve my needs?

What would work best cam or DSLR and what models would you recommend?

Any advise and recommendations would greatly be appreciated I wanna do this right 1st time and have a super professional look.

Thank you very much - I look forward to hearing from you.
