My grandfather comes to the U.S., 1968, Part II
1 year ago
Part II begins in the East Bay, has some freeway shots and a bit of footage on Mount Diablo, over to Oakland and Lake Merritt around the 3rd minute.
He films the crossing of the Bay Bridge starting at about 3:40, then into the City. There's a good shot of downtown from the Bridge, striking in its difference from the modern skyline. This was the year before construction began on the Transamerica Pyramid.
Much of the city footage is pretty washed-out, but you can see Chinatown, Grace Cathedral at about 4:30, a few cable cars, Golden Gate Park, and so on.
He gets to Ocean Beach (and what looks like the Cliff House) in the 5th minute, but it's very hard to make out much.
Minute six comes to "Los Hippies." It looks like one flips him off at about 6:07. For a few seconds around 6:13 you can see the reflection of his friend's car in some shop windows, and the faint image of my grandfather filming from the passenger seat. A couple wave at him at around 6:23 or so.
Around the 7th minute they cross the Golden Gate. At 7:45 they're in Muir Woods and the quality improves.
The last few seconds are at a house in the suburbs (Lafayette again? Walnut Creek?) and must have been filmed at least several months later, because my grandmother appears in them, waving to whoever drives away and then walking up the driveway.
