not to mention a great example of how a great story line and perfectly executed technical savvy makes you forget about what kind of camera was used. Great sound as well. Lav mics ?

And, watched it through. It was a masterpiece.

My God Philip, this is a very impressive and actual story. Joe must be inspired by the pedofile US priests disaster. Great angles, location, sound and actors, perfect!

That was incredible. The EX1 does some amazing things for under $10K. That said, the acting was also excellent and makes it feel so much more real.

I remember seeing this before. Presumably, this is the final version. Does anyone have a link to the version that was posted a couple months ago?
  • Joe Shaw plus 1 year ago
This is indeed the final version. The one that was up a couple of months ago was just a rough cut with unmixed temp sound, temp music etc.

When I first saw this a year ago, I thought it wasthe best film I had seen on Vimeo.
It still is. Since then I have seen all of your cinematography.

A question ... has something changed about the quality of the voices? They seem different to me.
  • Joe Shaw plus 1 year ago
The version you saw was actually in April and it was the rough cut. The sound would have been a temp cut only from the radio-mics. The final mix was done in surround and sounds great. Somewhat lost via the web!
  • Sage Pictures 1 year ago
I see what you mean. It looks like ambiance was added, but through my stereo headphones it seems like the mics picked up a lot of unwanted sound. In surround this would come across as distinct channels adding atmosphere. I guess this means I will have to do vimeo-centric stereo renders. Thank you, your reply explains a lot.
  • Joe Shaw plus 1 year ago
One other thing to consider is that I reckoned most people would not be listening on headphones. To some extent the audio has been normalised which really butchers any subtelty - in your headphones you will really notice that more than over little speakers.

It's a tough call, but the film was made and mixed for DVD/Screenings so that is where it will sond best.

Very good final cut over the rough cut we saw months ago. I think you have an award winner here. The only thing I would change is the TITLE... to something like "PASSED ON" "NOT FAR FROM THE TREE" - "Echo" just has a fun meaning of kids yelling and hearing the echo... I think a darker or more serious title - SILENCE OF THE LAMBS even if it makes little sense would do better... a biblical reference maybe. Anyway, great job.
  • Raj 1 year ago
I think "The Echo" suits it perfectly. The last line in the dialogue reinforces the idea - "and I'll come back when I do it again... share it.. again and again and again" like an echo.

I watched this the first time and took it as a reference to both the characters' past "coming back" to face them but that last line really gives the title a heavier meaning - David's character itself is like an echo to the event that happened in the past.

This is so well done I almost thought it was real. I thought that guy was about to go find another girl after the last scene. You really pulled me in with the twist when he said "did you confess what you did to me?" I loved it. The colors were great, the music was excellent and the acting was top notch. 5 Stars.
  • Joe Shaw plus 1 year ago
Thank you. I appreciate it. It's hard for me to watch it objectively anymore - so it's nice to know that line has the desired impact.

Very well done. Award Worthy. Great lead actor, the man who played the priest was good also. Loved the shots, the film colors looked very vivid too. It may have been effective to utilize the sound of the trains for dramatic effect. Maybe I'm just used to seeing that used many times to bring things to a climax. Just a suggestion. But I did love the film. Thanks

Some of the shots look almost 'Green-Screened'
  • Ralph Lindsen 5 months ago
i got the same feeling. I think the depth of field was a bit too shallow. The parts in focus sometimes felt separate from the rest. Might be me though (although i really love shallow DOF and Philip's work in general).

But a very good short, acting, videography, directing and sound too were very good.

Can you tell me the picture profile you used for this? Did you do any color correction in post if so...then how? Awesome short!
  • Philip Bloom plus 1 year ago
i can't really remember the specifics of the picture profile at the time. It was based on a Bill Ravens one from DVinfo.net
  •
  • Joe Shaw plus 1 year ago
Phil can give you the details on the picture profile. The colour correction was done in post by an excellent colourist working on a Baselight system, which is pretty high-end and total overkill for this. It was very much done as a favour...

Absolutely great guys. I was wondering what sort of mics you used. Were they lapel mics or did you solely use a shotgun with boom? I am curious because of the wide shot where they walk toward the camera - I can't see where you'd place a boom, but i imagine the sync would have been difficult if the dialogue was recorded separately. And did you run the audio through the EX1 only? Please enlighten - I loved it.
  • Joe Shaw plus 1 year ago
We were blessed with an excellent sound recordist with complete drama cart. We used lavs and boom and at times used another boom to record stereo atmos. So the sound was recorded separately, not straight into the EX1.

Well, that was unexpectedly compelling and satisfying! Other than the tech video that got me to this site in the first place (the refreshing use of real, instead of usernames being the reason to sign-up), this is the first thing I have seen from here and I can't tell you how impressed I was! The acting was complete, the script was paced and developed so well, the shots beautiful and intriguing in their subtlety...simply a fantastic effort. Thank you.
