Here is a nice deep zoom into the Mandelbrot set. The words "nice" and "deep" fall a bit short actually.
"Mathematical Porn" is a better description.
After watching this video things in my room started to bend and breathe!! I hope you enjoy the trip!!

The final magnification is e.214. Want some perspective? a magnification of e.12 would increase the size of a particle to the same as the earths orbit! e.21 would make a particle look the same size as the milky way and e.42 would be equal to the universe. This zoom smashes all of them all away. If you were "actually" traveling into the fractal your speed would be faster than the speed of light.

You might like to know that this animation took me about two days to set up. My computer then rendered day and night non-stop for just over a month to produce the animation. The resulting twenty-eight anti-aliased 1280x720 AVI files (each just under 2GB) were each watermarked at full frames (uncompressed) Then I stitched them all together uncompressed. I also added the audio track at the same time. This was all done in Virtual dub. (except watermarking) The final watermarked Avi with audio is a whopping 46GB - Then I compressed it to 495mb so I could upload it onto vimeo. I think it still looks fairly crisp
With the compression settings adjusted to achieve the highest quality, the resulting file size was about 1.5GB and looks absolutely sweet!
(Once vimeo plus is here I may well upload it!)
**edit**
highest quality version is still too big for vimeo even after vimeo plus has arrived but it is available for download from hd-fractals.com/downloads/

Best fractal zoom I've ever seen! The near ending is just amazing, I felt like there was some spiraling going on.

I had downloaded the Divx version, it was worth it!

I'm producing a Blu-Ray of 1080P fractals... I'd love to see this at 1920x1080p! I've found with my own work that the web is a poor place to see the amazing details these fractals "bring out".

Thanks! I agree. Its hard to maintain colours that pop and nice crisp clean edges when posting material! I sometimes get quite frustrated that other people cant watch them at the same quality as I do!

    a month...............
    my brain is hurting.
I would love to make one of those,..... but sadly, I don't have a computer that can run for weeks on end.
So Fractal xTreme will do just fine. I may render an HD fractal zoom to e-186. The final frame for it took about 20 minutes, so I might get the time to render it.
  • teamfresh plus 3 years ago
This was made with fx. (64 bit)
It would have taken only about 3 days - if I did not anti-alias!
  • Fractalwizz 3 years ago
What resolution did you render it in? 1280 by 720, or something smaller like 640 by 360
  • teamfresh plus 3 years ago
    I rendered at 1280x720 :)
  • joegle 1 year ago
Where can I find fx. google returns too much noise.

hey, have you checked out the group files lately. It might startle you.
  • teamfresh plus 3 years ago
    hehe it sure looks deep!

    oh, the video, yes.
the final frame was rendered without anti-aliasing.

The original depth estimation I had was way off. Try 6.7e+215. I will render this animation, but don't expect it any time soon. In 2 and a half years, my parents are buying me an even faster computer. 3.5GHz, 4GBs RAM, and Vista Ultimate 64Bit. I may be able to render this over a Christmas Break. I am estimating about at least a couple of weeks on that computer to render, nonstop. I may render a low res version without anti-aliasing and upload it here. But that is still estimating 11 hours at 320 by 240 res.
    Maybe.
    Someday.....

EDIT: I am currently rendering the last frame at 800 by 600.I will post it when it's done
  • teamfresh plus 3 years ago
cool! I always cant wait to see your animations! Its clear you have a real passion for them :)
  •
  • Fractalwizz 3 years ago
I have a passion for them but I don't have a fast computer that I can let run for days on end.
I will most likely not render this video until I buy that fast computer.Which won't be for who knows how long.
  • Fractalwizz 3 years ago
EDIT: I will press on the added feature to Fractal xTreme of the pause function. Where you can pause a rendering until you open it up again. It's like Ultra Fractal's.

I have the VMFractal for FCP/Motion. I'm really new at this. How do I even zoom in? I tried the zoom function in the device controls but that only goes to 8 (not even sure what that number means). Maybe I don't even know how to use the application. Can you tell me how to do this please?
  • teamfresh plus 3 years ago
It seems I use different software to you so I'm afraid I cant help you out on this one! Sorry :( Taking a wild guess - if you had to change a parameter, it may well be the magnification level - rather than the zoom, but I'm guessing in the dark!!!

what a horribly shit rendering. jerky 24fps? you're kidding me. i did that in 60fps at 1280x1024 on my 486 pc, 18 years ago.
    redo, and redo it right.
  • teamfresh plus 2 years ago
    You illiterate prick.

for your information the original video file is 120 fps so stick that in your pipe and try to remember that no one has control over the way vimeo chooses frame rates for their videos - apart from the vimeo staff - you knob jockey.

however much i love both the julia and mandel set, and however cool it is to find a full "beetle" representation that far in, i'm more of a spirals and ferns kind of guy when it comes to the mandelbrot set, so i found this entire 9 minute trip incredibly boring as it was just vertical and horizontal line patterns. amazing job with the rendering, though!

because they can "only" get 42 orders of magnitude in powers of ten (is that where douglas adams gets his number from?) but you have 214 here

Did you pick a point in the mandelbrot space and stick with it, or did you move it around a bit while rendering? I ask because I'm surprised how often you wound up in the middle of a semi-symmetrical structure.
  • teamfresh plus 2 years ago
good question, I made this late one night and just stumbled my way into it, I didn't really think about where I was going or how the journey would look to others!
  • InsightVR 2 years ago
So are we seeing you pilot in interactively, or did you explore until you found the endpoint and then rendered the whole thing zooming in right to that point?
  • teamfresh plus 2 years ago
I explored until I found the end point and then I rendered the whole thing.

I have a mac pro and use a program called Artmatic Pro. This program can be used to easily create user controlled fractal animations and lots of other stuff. I do it all the time. Plus I add my own music, and can make the animation sync with the music.

On the mac pro (dual quad core 2.8 ghz each core) an animation for posting on the web, similar to the above, lasting for the same time, can be rendered in a less than a day
I must be missing something here big time. LOL
  • teamfresh plus 2 years ago
my computer is a little slower than yours but I could render this in about 3 days - if i did not anti alias - maybe that is what you missed? LOL

That is a fantastic rendering! Agree re. the 'best bits are near the end' and 'more spirals please!'

    Two requests, one question:

    1) Can we have a zoom out, please? I much prefer it, it somehow conveys a sense of infinity much better than a zoom in.
    2) Could you also do one where you pan around much more, holding on the zoom every so often - as though piloting it towards interesting structures as you see them?
    3) Why bother with the anti-aliasing? (forgive if noobie question!)

Great stuff, anyway - and very cool soundtracks too. Nice one!
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
Thanks for the awesome comment - in answer to your questions..

    1) yes it can (and will) be done at some point soon

    2) see above

    3) anti aliasing may seem like a waste of time when you are at low levels of detail but when you reach areas of high detail it just looks awful if you do not anti alias the image. There are plenty of low quality fractal anims out there and I have no intention of adding to the list!

When fractal images are aliased – they look scratchy and you can see a lot of noise over the image. Aliasing comes about because the edge of the fractal is infinite, but the screen has a finite amount of pixels with which to represent it.

When the fractal is calculated, each pixel has to be either inside the fractal set, or outside the fractal set. Even though some of the pixels contain both the inside, and the outside of the fractal. This is what causes aliasing.

When the fractal image is anti-aliased, each pixel that contains both the inside and the outside of the fractal – is shaded between the two colours – according to how much of the inside and outside it contains. This removes aliasing. Although it is impossible to remove aliasing all together, anti-aliasing a fractal image greatly improves its quality.

I have uploaded an example to the group to show the difference here...

  • Mark McAndrew 1 year ago
Aha, thanks for explaining. Knew it was probly a noob question - you obviously know what you're doing!

Can't wait for the pan around/zoom out versions. I think you could get away with slower movement too? I kept finding myself trying to pay attention to various cool-looking areas but they were gone almost as soon as they appeared. Reminded me of watching the Star Wars space battle scenes...

(Plus, if Vimeo chops it from 120fps to 24fps, it would still look smooth as a freshly buttered bannister.)

Keep up the good work, dude. Viva Benoit!
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
No problem - glad you like it - and I love the thought of a freshly buttered bannister!

Totally awesome! I'm still seeing my walls bending...

Only one thing could make it better: Loopable. I mean, the first and last video frames have equal images and "speed". It could be left playing on an infinite loop, making a completely hypnotic wallpaper.
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
This is a beautiful idea - unfortunately no two Mandelbrot sets are exactly the same - I'm sure with some clever video trickery it could be done though. I would imagine you would have to use after effects or software similar to that. Glad you like it =)

I really like that... reminds me of rainbow island twists, which i think is 2^305 =10e91 aprox. or so if i remember properly... it's on youtube...it took about 6 weeks to calculate though because it entered a very high iteration region
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
cool, I will be sure to check it out =)
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
I like the way that it slows down towards the end - this will definitely be a feature i will add to my next animation.

  • I am a Fractal 1 year ago
take a look at my other fractal zooms, as well as my explanations. then maybe you would like to experiment going to a similar combination of objects in your zooms. there's so much more to see, and so little cpu time to see it with! i seriously wish i had better software that could control the zoom path much more nicely..
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
I will do, you may be pleased to know that my next animation goes through a few spirals on the way - it has been rendering for about 2 months now and is still rendering at the moment- Its around the same depth as this one but is taking longer due to the fact it travels through areas of high iteration. I think it will be ready for release in another month or so...
  • I am a Fractal 1 year ago
oh my well if my zoom into rainbow island twists was any indication, it's those last few frames that'll be the real killers... how many days per frame have you gotten up to? I'm pretty sure the final frame took nearly 3x the frame right before it... and i think we are talking over a month for just a frame, if i remember properly....
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
It shouldn't take that long for me but your right - the last few frames are always the longest to render, I estimate the last frame will take a couple of days at least if not a week! I cant see it taking any longer than two months to total completion but only time will tell. If i remember rightly the final frame of this animation (e214) took just over 18 hrs
  • I am a Fractal 1 year ago
yeah. it all depends on the iterations in that frame... i'm pretty sure by the end of rainbow island twists there were something in the order of a billion + iterations per pixel, and it sure did take a while heh. maybe about 18-24 days. I really wanted to go another 2^10th further but i calculate just those frames would take about a year.
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
hmmm well you made it with FX and the max iteration level is 500 million (1/2 billion) so maybe you miss counted the zeros by one?
the its' of the final frame of the up coming anim is in the millions...
*EDIT* the last frame took 20 million iterations in the end. it can be seen here..
    youtube.com/watch?v=foxD6ZQlnlU

I also zoomed to the same place in the mandelbrot fractal as in rainbow island twists and found it took 1 million iterations for the final frame. 2 million for an ultra crisp mandelbrot at the end....
  •
  • I am a Fractal 1 year ago
Sigh, i wish the mandelbrot set weren't so NP Complete... as if there were different levels of that...
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
    how do you mean?
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NP-complete
might take the fun out if it was
  • I am a Fractal 1 year ago
nah, then the limit would be more like, our imagination, and of course the computer's ability to handle such large (small) numbers, as opposed to the opressive limit of calculating every pixel all the way from the top down, to find out its color. look at how easy it is to look at an image that took a month to calculate... it is as easy to look at, in a fraction of a second, as an image that only took moments to calculate. it makes it very difficult to appreciate just how difficult it starts to become to even see what there is to see, so deep. and I want to see so much more!
  • teamfresh plus 1 year ago
well when you put it like that then I have no choice but to agree with you!
