The Edomites were descendants of Jacob's brother Esau. However, when Jacob's ancestors in Judah were defeated and taken into Babylonian captivity, their "cousins," the Edomites, neglected to help. In fact, the fall of Judah actually profited Edom and increased their wealth.
The Edomites boasted of their new-found power and viewed themselves as impossible to defeat. But God had not forgotten their neglect of Judah.
The prophet Obadiah warned Edom that judgment was near. Because they had forsaken Him and trusted in themselves, God would evoke vengeance upon them and destroy them forever.
