Great animation, but could you explain this "Arbeit macht frei"-sign (at 1:00 min) to me? I think I didn't get the clue...
  • Tab 1 year ago
Hi, in case you didn't know that sign in Nick's film is a reference to the sadistic sign outside the Auschwitz concentration camp: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbeit_macht_frei
Although I'm not sure what Nick was representing with it on the pig farm.
    It's a great little touch.
  • Nils Eckhardt 1 year ago
Yes, I know the origin of the sign. But I didn't get the relation to the farm.
    Anyway, it's a great work!
  • Jan Lachauer 1 year ago
    "fascist pigs" ?
Doesn't make it clearer why it's there tho. perhaps just a joke...
  • Paavo Happonen 10 months ago
it's probably a reference to george orwell's animal farm, in which farm animals rebel and overthrow human ownership, and the pigs set up an oppressive regime not unlike their predecessor

Great stuff, I like how it manages to kick in several directions! I see some Dave Cooper'ish design on the backgrounds. Was he an inspiration?

  • Nick Cross plus 1 year ago
They donated money towards the production of the film.

Ah! An important part of production indeed. Thanks for the info.

Awesome animation and great groundbreaking flash-line/digi-paint-combo backgrounds! Beautiful coffee pour shot. Tastful bacon cooking shot! Great Fox char designs. Dirty, nasty horrid story. But a true one! The best of 2011 so far!

Brilliant visual style! It's nasty and subverted like only an animation could be. This needs to be a feature film, but with a vengeful third act i think.

Man, what does it feels to be the best doing the thing that you love the most? I mean, it must be boring to hear these words from everybody, but you must accept it: you are a genius man! you have gone so far with your art, that will survive your death. You crossed that point where there's no return. YOu are simple the best one on this. So much work and talent is exeptional is very rare nowadays. Please, don't stop!!!!!!!

Just spotted a reference to a George Grosz painting at 2:58,
    rubensgallery.org/upload1/file-admin/images/new20/george%20grosz-988833.jpg

Fantastic short Nick! I've watched it many times. I particularly like the sound design in the final shot/end credits. The pig squeals are incredibly emotive.

But to be honest, story was a bit odd and i think the musical background could have been a little more diversified, sounds too linear.
