1. Why We're Here: Twin Cities
With all the possibilities around the world, what is the “it” that keeps people here in the Twin Cities? We suspected the answer to the question "Why We're Here" was both simple and incredibly nuanced -- worthy of art. We took our camera to the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul to find people willing to talk, unscripted, on film. The result is our collective love poem to the Twin Cities.

Why We're Here: Twin Cities is a six-minute film that explores what unites us, and unites us here, in the Twin Cities. Filmed on location the spring and summer of 2010 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the film features an original score by John Munson of the New Standards, the Twilight Hours, Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare, camerawork by Adam Olson and editing by Sam Heyn.

I've been back for 10 years after having been away for 11. Sometimes I ask why I came back. Your video is a starting point for an answer to that question.
  • Glad to help!
  •
  • I visited the Twin Cities last summer and am convinced it's where I'm going to move this year. Clean city with very friendly people.
  • Clean and cool -- what more do you need?? Good luck with your move!

Really awesome video. What did you use for recording the audio of the interviews?
  • The sound was recorded separately with a Marantz 671 audio recorder in 24 bit using a Sennheiser 416 microphone.

    Thanks!

They're called the Twin Cities for a reason guys. There are two of them. Don't forget St. Paul. :P
  • You're right! We love the St. Paul Farmers' Market shots, but they're not readily identifiable as St. Paul. If we were to start over, we'd address that differently. But hindsight is 20/20. We're both proud St. Paulites and wouldn't intentionally slight our city. The viral speed of this video getting around has been amazing! Thanks for your comment.

I agree with everything said 150%!

PS. Where were the shots of winter in the cities!?!
  • Timing worked out perfectly for us (inadvertantly!) to have warm summer shots shown in the bitter winter months.

After living on the west coast for 27 years I have just moved back to the Twin Cities and am so happy I did. I LOVE the winter (this year, anyway) and look forward to spring, summer and fall (something we were sadly missing in San Francisco). Thank you for this lovely video.

I like the fact that you didn't try and make a tourist film or felt like you had to be more categorical. It's narrow scope and mellowness is what makes it appealing. Also glad Sam cut it. He's a great guy.

I am originally from Ukraine. Lived in the Twin Cities for about eight years and then we had to move to Chicago for a few years. I love the Twin Cities with all my heart. No other place comes even close, including my home country. I am SOOO looking forward to coming back to MN. If you ask me 'why'? It's simple. People. They are genuine there. Love ya Twin Cities, Minnesota! :)

Awesome video. What kind of tripod/monopod did you use? The panning looks great.
