The construction there, of a seven arched bridge across the Aragon river at the behest of Alfonso el Batallador was the origin of the development of the town of Sangüesa as a pilgrimage station. This was despite a small detour from the Jaca Pamplona road, used by pilgrims travelling the Somport route in order to reach Puente la Reina.
