98. I Live To Let You Shine
For Seb.

<3

The story of star's journey to turn into the sun.

(*This is the first time I've ever illustrated and animated anything in its entirety in Illustrator and After Effects on my own, so I apologize for the shotty animation and the poor illustrations...I'm still learning.)

Over 100 layers in AE, 10 hours of painstaking self-learning, rendering, exporting, 3 glasses of wine, impatience, 2 cups of coffee, and four puffy spicy Cheetos.

So good, Karen. I like how you kept the qualities of your construction paper animations with this. You are so talented.

    Only 4 cheetos powered this?!
  • Yeah they were too spicy, and it upset my stomach. So I had to stop after 4.

*zzzz yawn* time for sleep now.

For someone who's just beginning I will say you certainly have the workflow of AE down. I loved it, the simplistic images are beautiful, and paired with some wonderful animation! 1000 layers is very impressive, wait till you get to 5000! But as long as you label and group your layers your good. Wonderful work!
  • haha oh no! not 1000, just a little over 100. Oh gosh I don't know if I want to get to over 5000. I feel like my attention span deals with stop motion better than this type of animation. It was a good learning experience and I hope I can me more patient to learn some more next time. hee hee. Thanks a lot Matt.
  • Matt staff 1 year ago
ahh 100, well still very impressive. Not a lot of people could have done what you did in 100 layers either! Yeah stop animation is an entirely different beast, I find it to be easier to manage as well, but AE makes things so quicker it just draws people in. great stuff!

are yo kidding me? this is KILLER! Like Ben said, I like how you kept the quality of your construction paper style. and i'm totally in love with that submarine!
  • aww thanks meesh. the submarine sound like this "blub blub"

The one thing I like most about doing construction paper over this, is that when I did CP Stop motion, if i needed something, it would be a matter of seconds to a couple minutes that I'd have it if I cut it out. When I did this thing, if I needed a new element, I had to keep going back and forth between two programs..it was so obnoxious. But next time I'll try scanning CP into the computer and animating it. I just don't think my butt like sitting too much looking at the screen when I do these.

    <3
  • loonachic plus 1 year ago
oh wow. that's quite a process!

i hear you on the butt thing. when i'm in the middle of something (mostly work related junk), i tend to hold off on going to the bathroom until i explode. my arse usually hurts by the end of the day too.

Keeee-yoooot. I suggest you build a human size replica of your animations, so we could all live there happily ever after.
But that might be a bit too much.
  • hahaha....oh man my thesis for grad school involves some sort of live size building of something in my imagination....I don't know if that will go over well haha.

  • Aww thanks P, Mob. means a lot coming from you. To a certain degree it's kinda weird to see drawings come to life...not really a bad weird, just different. I got more of a fascination when I saw your animation.

Mm i love GATH do you have their new album? It's divine.

    miss ya.

oh PS i liked your latest stop motion a lot...I kind of felt the same way..I was supposed to be doing homework, but I didn't want to, so I did this instead.

wow! u just took me on a 'magical mystery tour', Karen! :]
came out so sweet! and u know, that after all, all those sleepless nights are worth it.. :] i know exactly what u mean... :] great song choosing btw!
  • Magical mystery tour sound dangerous and sexual. hahaha. Haha good thing this was only one sleepless night. I have this problem where sometimes I have to start and finish something in one sitting or else if I stop, I'll get bored with it and never return to it again. I'm very impatient and have some sort of creative ADD. booooo

i'm glad you enjoyed this silly thing hee hee.

sweet. I love the colors you chose. Also, the spaceship piqued my interest since my upcoming music video features a ship of a similar design. It'll come out in early November since the band is tryin to push it big. I'm a self taught animator as well, so I have mad respect for this!
  • Thanks a lot eric, that means a lot coming from you, whose work I enjoy thoroughly. Oo lala I can't wait to see what you are up to with that video. I wish I could give animation more time, but I will keep trying to...I need to be more patient with it, for sure. hee hee

je viens de voir que tu parles français ^^, la vidéo est très jolie a voir ^^, j'aimerai bien apprendre a faire des pareils, ce serait sympa que tu me montres comment t'as fais ...
  • The best thing to do is to just keep on practicing everything and take things slow one step at a time :-)

I'm sure you are capable of awesome stuff too!

great work! i've always wanted to make an animation using illustrator and you've made me even more determined to try something.
  • Oh man you should definitely do it! I've been wanting to also for a while, so I decided I should just bite the bullet and do this. I kept thinking through the whole thing that "oh my god this is too long, I want to make it shorter" after spending 4 hours to do 30 seconds or so, but it's well worth it at the end. :-) You should definitely take a crack at it and let me know how it goes!

Apparently, seeing that this was posted 5 whole hours ago, I am pretty late in the game! I've never seen such a strong response and you so deserve it!
  • hahaha, thanks. I always get the strongest response on the silliest videos. But this one I think is different to me, especially with the meaning of this song, and the illustrations involved in the animation. A lot of special different elements for a special friend :-)

    Thanks a lot Faye!

oh wow karen, this is just so wonderful. it's almost like for the entire duration of the video i was in that place just between sleep and waking. now i really wish i could drift off and have dreams like that.
  • I day dream a lot...i think that's evident in about 75% of my videos.

My head is always sitting in the clouds between consciousness and subconsciousness.

    thanks so much ena <3

I don't know much about AE, but I know I like this. Good work. Great storytelling.
  • Thanks a lot Todd, I'm glad that I was able to tell a somewhat coherent story, it's pretty hard if you don't know what you're doing as far as technical goes.

    Thanks for checking this out.

    It's pretty
if you have 100 layers, you should improve your workflow a lot, using precompositions and adjustment layers will help a lot.
i love the look of the clouds in the beggining, they look really fluffy
  • haha yeah i know, I just don't know how to use AE that well. I've never really used it for animation at all. This was the first time. I guess I just had so many layers because of all the separate elements of the illustrations from AI. What are adjustment layers?

Thanks..they were pretty fluffy i ate some. hee hee
  • fDevant 1 year ago
Adjustment layers are layers in which you apply effects to affect all layers underneath them, you can mask them and control the opacity to fine-tune the effect. they are lovely, and one of AE's best features.
  • Does that work if every single layer moves independently of the others?

    (thanks by the way)
  • fDevant 1 year ago
    yeap it works
    and you're welcome ;)

Very gentle animation, the pastel colors are very nice!
  • I tried to make it so that it was easy on the eyes, but I think using the yellow and black ruined my want to stay on a pastel palette. hee hee. Thanks a lot :-)

Where is the music from? Is it yours? Is it from elsewhere? The mix of the two elements made me want to drink tea by the water and be in love with so many things.

Makes me want to fall in love with life. :-)

No, Karen, for real. That was really good. And I'm a picky old curmudgeon. I went from Sleeping Beauty to this, and it held up.
  • Haha that does mean a lot coming from you, especially since I think you're really funny.

Great job Karen! This must have taken a lot of dedication. I'm surprised it only took 2 cups of coffee :)
  • Let's be honest here, the wine probably helped more than the coffee did. hahah

    Thanks a lot Aaron!
