Chaz and I met early on a cold and rainy day in January to shoot this "video." Staying true to Chaz's DIY aesthetic, It was just he and I, a super 8 camera, and a box full of Kodak film. As the sun made its way from the clouds, Chaz, with the help of some of his closest friends, had danced all over our town of Columbia. This was the funnest I have ever had on a film shoot. My face hurt from all the damn smiling.

"Still Sound" from the album "Underneath The Pine" available 2/22 from CARPARK Records.

Shot and cut by Steve Daniels. Filmed in Columbia South Carolina on glorious Kodak Ektachrome 100D, Super 8mm film. Shoot film. F your super8 iphone app.

Thanks. That's all due to the film stock. No color correction was done.

do you know of a place that will develop and digtize 8mm film?
  • Steve Daniels plus 11 months ago
Hey Austin. I've never shot regular 8mm, but I think Dewaynes Photo and Yale do it.

Now as far as Super 8mm goes, there are many. I'd recommend Film & Video Services in Minneapolis for cheap and good Tri-x transfer. I did this ektachrome film at Yale which was great.

What a fantastic video. It got me hooked on Toro Y Moi. Ever since getting into photography, I've been drawn to the warm, nostalgic vibe I get from the appearance of film. Nothing else compares to it. This is so inspirational. I can't wait to start shooting on 8mm.
  • Steve Daniels plus 11 months ago
Thanks for the kind words Kevin. I agree, nothing beats the look of film.

"Shoot film. F your super8 iphone app. "
I fully agree with you but we have to remember the cost of Super8. I don't know in USA but for me in France it's about 50€ (70$) to buy, develop and digitize 3min. The cost of 2.5 canon 814 huhu...

Anyway, eat pasta, shoot good film like yours and F your super8 iphone app.

PS : is there a reason to have it only in 640x480 ? I uploaded mine in 724p vimeo.com/21553574 but had it from the lab digitized in 1080p which looks great.

Really, really great stuff! One of the best I've seen in a while. Exactly what a music video should be: freewheeling, arresting images that complement the music without forming too literal of a relationship with it.

And I'm a big fan of Ektachrome 100D, too.

hey steve. i love the shots. how did you export/upload this video to keep it standard size?
  • Steve Daniels plus 7 months ago
    Thanks Austin.
It's standard def. Super 8 film was telecined and transferred to analog tape. I really dig your DSLR work. Beautiful images.

you got sold Steve into super 8. Done, Back to true real stuff. Do you recommend any particular camera-lens/projector/film stock ?
  • Steve Daniels plus 4 months ago
Cool. For camera, I'd recommend any of the big names in photography...Canon, Minolta, Nikon. Nizo Braun is an exceptional camera from Germany that is also great. The "Pro" cameras all come with great stock lens. Look for "XL" in the camera name to denote electronic. Check this guy out. I've bought cameras from him before. Reasonable and reliable.

Kodak Extachrome 100D and Tri-X are favorite stocks.

Thanks mate for your prompt reply. I do really appreciate that. Indeed man , a nice website but I missed on couple nice Beaulieu gone already like the Beaulieu 4008 ZM4 IV. Gorgeous camera. We'll see I might pick another one since I'm very new to 8mm. Again, I second the folks up here, I concur with this video/soundtrack. Very positive, alive, real and true and F yeah, F your iphone app X_X
  • Steve Daniels plus 4 months ago
Ah yes, I failed to mention Beaulieu...considered the pinnacle of super 8 cams. I've never owned one but have seen amazing images they've produced. Some have power source issues to be aware of.

oh ok. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for the advise. Appreciate that.Oh, do you advise any other folks for film stick or telecine services ??
  • Steve Daniels plus 4 months ago
Are you in the States? If so, Yale and PacLab are good. I've never used Pro8mm because they are too damn expensive. I love FILM & VIDEO SERVICES in Minneapolis. Nothing fancy, cheap, reliable and do great work. filmvideoservices.net/
Website pretty outdated. Id' call 'em instead.
