Song is Tonight by Smith Westerns. I got so excited because I knew I'd heard it before but I couldn't place my finger on who it was so I went scrounging through my music collection... took me a while haha.

Really enjoyed this. It really does capture the 50s kid gangs, rock n roll, Grease movement. Love the way you have graded the film to add to the feel, not to mention the use of vinyl sounding music. Well done!

Amazing film and great grading job. I decided to feature this as the Short film of the week on my blog. You join the ranks of some very talented film makers. From indie wonders to the man Martin Scorcese himself! Feel free to leave any comments about your experiences making the film etc...

I liked this, but the vinyl scratchings were distracting and really not needed. In the 1950's, it didn't sound like that, it was clean.
  • Daniel Hauswald 10 months ago
I didn't find them distracting, in fact I didn't even really find them that noticeable until you brought them up. They could have maybe been toned back by about a third, but they went with that whole "Teenage Fever Dream" aspect of it—A view of these events as being some kind of fantasy arising from a mess of old memories. (at least that's what I got out of it)

It doesn't sound as much like vinyl to me as much as a poorly maintained analog soundtrack... As a 35mm projectionist I can tell you, when you get poorly printed foreign or super-indie trailers that aren't in the standard cyan soundtrack designed for red-light soundheads and they get to run for a few months accumulating gunk and dust, they can sound just as bad or worse if you don't run the print through film guard or clean it... I'd imagine it would be even worse on 16mm over a number of years of neglect.

I have to commend them for not going overboard with the dust and scratches, too... It is something that is so often over done, but it is used here as a barely noticeable noise and texture that just subtly contributes to the mood.

Something inbetween the warriors, grease, and raveonettes, I love the feeling of the film, nice black and white, the music is superb, I'm assuming you had quite a deal of money to be able to afford renting out the old cars, in anycase congrats, even if I think a wide shot or two could have been necessary to seperate certain scenes.

Nice piece of work. Someone mentioned they want a leather jac like shown. I want mine back from Iggy Pop who stole it ! Who cares? They're a dime a dozen any way. What I appreciate: the black & white...the contemp mixed w/ what I grew up with, the scratchings in the vinyl soundtrack, a particular affluent sound in the voices which depicts burbs anglo 50's-60's genre teens, the autos, the out-gangstas (no one today wld write their gang name on their jacket), night shots (sky, characters, objects, sound). What I want to see: my WIP which brings your concept up to 2011. These aren't easy things to do. Subliminal hits of La Dolce Vita, here & there. Good job Eddie ! I know it's 4 months since it was posted...wonder what you're up to in this LA late July. Best to ya.
