194. (VIDBLOG) I Just Left - Europe 2008
182. Don't Move
I spent 11 days in Europe in September. I went without a plan, by myself. All I knew is that I was going to visit Berlin since I had a friend there, and that I needed to fly out of Heathrow on the following Tuesday. Everything between was more or less played by ear.

The first days were lonely, I was lucky enough to meet some cool people at the hostel I was staying at in Paris and traveled with them a bit. Berlin was great since I already knew someone and could easily get to know all their friends. It was just such a fun, spontaneous, adventure. Exactly what I wanted it to be.

The vidblog was edited sequentially, meaning I didn't rearrange any of the shots in time - for the most part it's an accurate, linear showcase of who I met and where I went. Enjoy.

    I love you!

This was a surprise video for me. I followed you day by day and thought that you would document the whole trip with your phone.

Did I see a statue of Michael Jackson holding Bubbles?
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
Haha, yeah, that was at Versailles. Jeff Koons was doing some ridiculous art installation with all this weird shit sporadically placed inappropriately all over. Was so weird. Kinda cool. But weird.

"Don't fall asleep on the train" is probably some of the best advice anyone can give when traveling through Europe.

Awesome VLog, makes me miss Europe.

you're interactive telephone works in Paris?!
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
SORT of. The internet didn't work in Berlin for some reason. I had to pay a shitton to get a data plan. My phone bill was still horrendous. Calling was like $1 per minute too. Yea, that was actually one of the biggest expenses.

It's got that Justin Johnson flavah. What camera were you shooting with and how much footage did you shoot? The audio quality really helps the vibe.
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
I'm still using my trusty GL1! I just cheat and put it into a 720p wide screen format in final cut.

I shot about an hour and 15 minutes of footage before my battery died.

Yeah, I always feel these need to be watched with good headphones. It puts you more inside of my head.

Justin nice things happen to those that just shoot. And you let us join you on a journey from London to Paris to Germany. And your editing was great. And the use of "LEAF" was golden. Again nice job! Bravo
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
Thank you for your kind words -- I love that -- "good things happen to those that just shoot" - it's the kind of motto that got me shooting vidblogs in the first place - an excuse to film without having to do any kind of pro-production besides hitting the little red button :)

absolutely beautiful. it reminds me of a year ago in early october when i went to vienna alone for a week and a half. i had a friend there so i wasn't completely alone, however he was in class often. it was somewhat bittersweet being in a beautiful land and being alone, as this was also the "honeymoon" for myself of getting over a break up and moving on with my life.
i didn't mean to pour my soul out, your nostalgic video just struck a chord. cheers

Haha, yes!! I'm lucky enough to have a cool job that will let me go away for a couple days. Some people don't have such an advantage. Maybe if the economy tanks people will start getting the hell out of America and taking 'vacations' to Europe more often.

I went to Europe On June 28 with my friend, we went to Paris for her mom's magazine. She is the publisher of Elle magazine, and since she is my best friend she invited me. After a week, they left, and my mom and sister came over and we spent two nights in a fair hotel then flew to Rome, took a 12 day cruise across Europe. We got a whole lot of Italy, some Greece, and Croatia. It was the best trip.
P.S. I live in Manhattan, too!
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
Beautiful! I really want to see Spain and Italy next. I hear Eastern Europe is a real trip too ... Prague and all that. I'm hooked now, I can't wait to go back. The longass flight across the Atlantic is painful, though.

    We're island-buddies!

  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago

Really beautiful, next time don't forget to go to Amsterdam :) - I loved the way you filmed the reality. It is really pure
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
I screwed up and should have got my Eurail to ... Holland, right? I got Denmark instead, being stupid and thinking Amsterdam was in Denmark. Oops :( Probably didn't have time to get over there anyway, but I do regret it.
  • Justus Bruns 3 years ago
Indeed, It's nice that you know. Some people here in Holland think NY lies in Cali. So don't feel stupid. I'm happy that you regret.
  • Aaron Fortson III 3 years ago
Thats ok if you were in Denmark I hope you went to Christiania.. its like a lil mini Amsterdam.. There was also a very cool boat in the harbor that was gutted and turned into a club. I had a great time in Denmark. Amsterdam was great too.

  • Kyle Delso 3 years ago
You stayed in a hostel?! Despite the poorly written movie about them!? Haha, nice job though. It seemed very rushed, with all the quick cuts and what not, and i love it.
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
The hostel was actually nice! They had modern swipe cards for the entry - it felt safe ... it was fun sharing a room with 6 people since you got to meet a lot of folks. Problem was the beds were TINY and rickety, but we were in the heart of Paris, so whatevs.

I like cutting mercilessly, and wanted this to fit within the time of the song, so quick cuts work well I think. It also capture the rushed feel I had scampering around with only 11 days.
  • Kyle Delso 3 years ago
    Hahah, well that's good!

But yes, i'd agree: the editing worked out :)

  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
I dunno --- I found it stunning in a lot of ways I don't see much in America, and I've traveled around quite a bit here. The little villages you pass on the train ... just jaw-dropping. Not a WalMart in sight :)

Justin, i once begged you to make another vidblog and you said you were working on your opus. if this was it it did not disappoint.

I don't know if i have told you this, but watching your vidblogs is like remembering your life. absolutely beautiful man.

I am learning all the rules and regulations that are to be followed to make a film that the film snobs will accept. i hope that i never forget how to make videos they a completely different animal. if film is my wife, videos like this will always be my mistress.

    Thanks for the memories.
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
    Thank you for the comment!!!

No, actually, my opus is still coming. This was something I whipped up a couple days after my trip. The opus is still in progress. Hopefully I'll make more headway on it in the coming weeks.

I like that you say a vidblog is like memories, that's sort of the concept behind it ... this is the trailer I made for my Season One Vidblogs DVD many years ago that I think you'll enjoy ...

Very sweet piece. I can't believe you had the courage to carry the camera into all of those situations and especially conquer that dilemma; do I shoot this or do I live this? Thanks for choosing the later. Bravo.
P.S. Berlin and GL-1s are where it's at.
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
It's true, that does come into play some times. I've been video blogging like this for the past 5 years, I guess, and at first it was very difficult. When you're around people who know you're crazy they don't get too weird when you bring out the video camera, but it's def hard to introduce people you've just met minutes ago to that sort of thing. Hence, not a lot of clips of people in the first part, since I was by myself and meeting new folks who might flip at such behavior.

thank you for introducing me to the album leaf. And thanks for taking back on a trip through Europe. Made me kinda sad about my own journey. I took my HF100 with me but I was travelling alone and it just felt so inappropriate to break out my camera everywhere I was. You have inspired me to go back and get it right next time. Cheers!

The Album Leaf reminds me a lot of Mogwai, but a little more constant. Mogwai tends to build up and release.
  • justinsuperstar 3 years ago
I'm not a huge Mogwai fan, but to be fair I haven't really spent too much time listening to them. Stuff that's too ambient without a beat isn't my cup o tea. I'll have to give them another shot :)
