Recently, Stu Maschwitz sat down with a friend who wanted to learn about color and why his 7D stills look so much nicer than his video.

He had some 7D stills and video from a food prep shoot.

Stu helped him match the video to the stills and used almost every feature of CII.

This is their story.

Thanks you so much for posting this. It's one thing to read it in a book, but it's so much more immersive and practical when you see someone putting it into play.

I kept pausing the video to check my email. It took me a couple times before I realized it was coming from the demonstration. Good stuff!

Firstly , wouldn't the still photographs differ from the video shoot by the different styles that may have been used? That is, flat settings for video and probably Standard style for the stills. Secondly, as good as this is and, I will pre-empt my own request by guessing that the principles are transferable to Premiere Pro, but in any case, it would be good if you could do one of these tutorials in Premiere CS5 as well. I have noticed there is a dearth of Colorista and Looks examples displayed in PPro.
  • andrearusky 1 year ago
I also like to use Premiere, so you can edit and grade all at once.. but I think the interface of Colorista works better in AE that it does on Premiere (slow feedback)
And i like how you can stack adjustment layers and reduce their opacity in AE. Premiere can't do that (yet)
  • Stu Maschwitz plus 1 year ago
That problem has been largely resolved with the latest update to Premiere Pro.

    cool !

btw.. those are tortellini not ravioli ;-)

Regarding the Premiere fix - it has made it slightly better but by no means as smooth as in After Effects. Still, Colorista II is very good at what it can do. If you have a minute have a look at my Flying with Whales short. vimeo.com/19166547 I shot this flat with a Variable ND fliter so it desperately needed grading which I did in post using Colorista II. The results are fantastic.

great tuturial. I love your start to finish mentality with no "and just adjust this to your liking" stuff.

any reason you were in AE and not FCP?
  • Ryan Hargrave 1 year ago
Thanks, but your comment really makes no sense except maybe that FCP plugin layout is screwier than AE (sorta.. depends on what you're familiar with). Not sure what Color has to do with it when Colorista II is a plugin to FCP? And I doubt whether Adobe or Apple is a client of Red Giant played a part since Red Giant uses both liberally in tutorials.

My question was that when I've seen Stu use FCP and AE to demo Colorista II, why is he using one over the other. I'm sure it's famialirty in this case, but I'm curious.
  • Stu Maschwitz plus 1 year ago
Ryan, I agree, lin2log's comment makes no sense. :)

I used AE because that's where I like to online my projects. As fard as Colorista goes, the only real difference would be that AE lets us show the wireframe overlays for the Power Masks, where FCP does not.

The conversational style really worked for me. The were some really interesting things that came out of the questions that I hadn't seen in other tutorials

Loving this color correction session and also loving this thumbnail comp script... is it easy to do? Anyway, thanks you so much for this!
  • Hi, for the thumbnail comp script, my advise is getting this awesome guide wrote by Stu "The master himself".

Very nice, learned a lot more about CII but also about CC/grading in general. Tried some of the stuff you showed on a shot where the white balance is off and the face is almost lobster red. I trusted my eye and got the skin much better, but the grid never really showed up. It would be wonderful if you could show some more about getting skin color/tones right. Again, awesome tut Stu!

One of the more useful cc explanations I have seen when using Coloista 2... but, this is not for the beginer AE user... the conversational approach adds a lot of insight into the nuances of Colorista and CC in general. Very good... nice addition.

Thank you for the great work, Stu, and my respects for the patience in working with clients who have absolutely zero understanding of even the most basic concepts of color correction. I feel he never understood your point regarding the possible presence of differing light sources and their respective temperatures.

I'm not a fan of blown images (both the footage or the stills), but you were asked to match the two, and I think we all learned a lot in the process.

    Thank you again.

so good to get an idea of how to use this tool effectively in a subtle way. All I could find on you tube were lots of people using this to grade really extreme looks. You've shown me the basics for correction and grading that I wanted to find out. Thanks really helpful stuff
