good job Duncan. Not my ideal camera for something like that!!
  •
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
mine neither but couldnt take a pro ENG camera into the country

Nice Duncan. Did you feel less threatened with the Canon?
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
yes and no, you stand out less, but at the same time they still grabbed me and tried to take the camera. It was alot easier to get into the country with a stills camera rather than an Eng camera.
  • not only solid, but this footage was also quite elegant, especially given the circumstances
  • Joe Sheffer plus 1 year ago
Duncan...how did you go about entering? Are you on a tourist visa?
  •
  • Paul Reid 1 year ago
Nice camera work in tense environment. I would like the narration to be louder. The ambient street noise makes it difficult to understand.
  •
  • andrew marshall plus 1 year ago
Good work Duncan. It helps to be able to blend into the crowd rather than become a target so the camera was your friend there. Did you have any rig to keep it steady?
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
That was why I took it, certainly not an ideal camera to cover these sorts of events. In terms of rig - just my right and left hand - nothing else, the IS on the 24-105 is outstanding, without IS it would have been a nightmare, I also use a battery grip which helps with keeping it steady
  •
  • Chris Duke plus 1 year ago
Very good job indeed. I agree with Paul that the narrator was hard to hear toward the end over the crowd noise. And I was going to ask about camera stabilization but Andrew took care of that already! Well done.

IS is a lifesaver. Keep asking Santa for a fast prime with IS, but he's ignoring me...

Good job. I can highly recommend the journalist having a rode lavallier mic fed into a zoom h1 and sync up later in post. audio would be brilliant.
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
thats exactly what I did, except I used a Tascam and Seinnheiser Lavallier mic. As I said earlier - the mix was fine for broadcast, as it was a split track mix, now that I have compressed it for vimeo it has mixed the tracks hence why the reporter sounds quiet in both stand up and voice track
  • www.carlpendle.com plus 1 year ago
Ahh...I see. Shame that it did that but great job anyway.
  •
  • Jeffrey Butler plus 1 year ago
Nice camera work; fantastic lens, eh? I think that's actually a great camera for an "event" like that; mix didn't bother me any...
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
thx, I did try to explain earlier that the mix was effected by the export changing it from split to mixed but after listening to it again on vimeo i dont see what the problem is, worth thinking about though the next time I export

Is this part of the reason I see the internet went down this morning in Egypt - good job on the coverage. --

One day, when I grow up I wanna do stuff like this !! ;)

Nice work Dunkan. Sorry for question but which Sennheiser mic did you use?
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
its a lapel mic, not sure of the model number - it needs powering though

    thank you

Knew it was Canon 5D! lovely crisp warm pics - keep it up!
  •
  • What did you use to edit with FCP? The Eos plugin?
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
I used a lexar fw800 cf card reader - log and transfer using Eos plugin into final cut

Great piece of work. It's good to finally watch the news from Egypt with some steady shots! Sometimes it feels like these news reports can only be made with all kinds of shaking-handheld-bourne-ultimatum-shots to make it feel more urgent... I'm glad you didn't do that!
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
I certainly wouldnt be shaking the camera to give it a 'look' but sometimes if something is far away and your getting pushed and shoved its unavoidable, i was lucky that i was in enough space. Is very tricky with the limited focal length but if you can brace against something you can keep it pretty steady with the 70-200 as long as it has IS

Dangerous situation. Solid footage for a sketchy scene.

    Duncan, very well done!
    Thanks for sharing.

I was filming for the BBC with the Canon 7d El Baradei when he left the nice and comfortable Vienna back to Egypt 2 days ago....It was the first time I have used the Canon 7d for pure ENG work and it worked well. I didn't bother with "good" audio for the "door step" interview at all. We planned ahead that my correspondent will record the interview on her Marantz and later I've synced it in Premiere.

Just to say I spoke to Duncan by phone earlier. He is fine, but unable to get online at the moment due to the internet being cut. Lets hope he can send some more vid soon.

Respect to the people who risk that much to hold the mirror for us all to see.

I hope Egypt's people get what they want!

  • TR Umrani plus 1 year ago
Very nice work under those circumstances. Did you use a viewfinder and camera mounted mic for ambient sound?
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
no camera mounted mic was used, no viewfinder - just the 5D with battery grip, 24-105 canon f4 IS. Ambient sound was done using the built in mic on the camera, The reporters audio was done using a Tascam DR100 and Seinheiser Lapel mic.
  • TR Umrani plus 1 year ago
Well, that makes it more impressive. I don't think I could have gotten proper focus without a viewfinder. Nice work.
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
when the light allows i make sure im around f16, so i have a very large depth of field, there is no way you can rack focus while working in a riot / protest.

Powerful images Duncan that made me feel like I was there :) It would be great to see what you could do with a smaller camera like the GH2 in these situations.
  •
  • Great Job Duncan, steady hand held shoots and once again this is a good example how 5DmkII can be used for ENG job.

Great work mate, Im off to Syria to shoot a short factual Doc on its political views. Went over last year with a Sony cam, ridiculously strict. Hopefully the size of the 5D will help. What (brand) bag did you use for your gear on the go?
  • duncan sharp 1 year ago
It's a kata bag that I used when entering the country. While on the street ive been using a non branded small bag, it's kind of a girls bag but looks very non discript
