Aurora borealis time lapse photography from Iceland.
Most of this is done on my Canon 40D but some is done on my Canon 400D.
My 400D is now my preferred camera for time lapse as I only produce medium sized jpg files (easy to process and I get more frames per memory card).
Most of these shots were taken with a 15-20sec exposure. I have been doing this for about a year now and I am keen to learn how to get better quality video.
The music was writen on Reason on Sunday night. I call it 'Longing'.

It depends what the conditions are like. The really bright auroras let me use an iso of 640 and a 15 sec exposure. Some of these shots were with 400iso and a longer exposure (or I have had to boost the levels in PS).
i'm very curious to know how fast these move.
The frames were consecutive, in other words the shutter would be open for 15sec and then straight afterward would open for another 15sec. This is far from real-time. 15 sec would give me 4 frames per minute and then I run the movie at 6 frames per sec... work it out, but for example the frozen sea where the ice starts floating out to sea - that was 1 hour.
Yes it was bloody cold.
As for the iso, it really is a case of getting the best of both worlds, I'm sure the quality would be fine at 1600iso, but I would run out of memory pretty quickly if I was taking a shot every few seconds. At 640iso I can produce usable stills if I want, but the quality wouldn't be so good (on my 400D). I am open to experimentation though and I might try a few more techniques before the year is out.
ever shoot this stuff RAW?
Love the ice on the shore when it slides into the sea : ) and the Aurora get crazzzy !
