This is a 8 minutes short film, not a quick youtube video, please be patient or watch it later.

I shot this film over the course of a year. It then took me few months to edit and color grade it.

Synopsis:

Winter 2010, the stunning landscape of Iceland succumbs to the Arctic cold. Beaches and lakes get frozen, but something unexpected is going to happen... the earth shakes, warms up, and suddenly a big crack opens up at the top of the glacier Eyjafjallajokull. Lava, smoke, ash and fire come up from the depth of the earth, melting everything in its path.

Shot with the Canon 7D and 5D MarkII using Canon & Carl Zeiss lenses.

Special thanks to Die! Goldstein for the music. die-goldstein.com

  • I wish there was a little bit of handheld stuff to make me feel like I was there or part of a memory or something. I could feel the tripod and rig it was resting on, so I didn't get pulled in very much. That said, I love the lava shots. :)
  • Enrique Pacheco plus 1 year ago
Well, it could work, but I wante to look this way, more like I wasn´t there, just nature.
  • What I mean is that the rig movements and things made it your presence noticeable, but not in an emotional way. Nonetheless, beautiful imagery. :)
  • Jon Collins 1 year ago
I have to agree with this. Iceland is an absolutely stunning place but I just felt this piece needed to breath a little more.
  • Leo Linbeck 1 year ago
I actually feel the opposite. The smooth camera gave it a much more cinematic touch and simply wowed, while I think the handheld would have ruined the overall effect. Maybe its just because I would have expected handheld... The music, the camera movement, the land were all utilized perfectly. Well done Enrique
  • Since there are so many rig movement videos out there now, this one gave it that same feel of noticing the rig underneath you moving. And, why would you have expected handheld when every 5D video of this volcano and iceland have been hooked to rigs and tripods?

It didn't "toke" you a year, it "took" you a year. Might want to fix that.

Also, "warm up" should be "warms up".

Who would have thought Hell could be so beautiful...
A wonderfully crafted piece of work, and my only criticism (and a mild one) would be the same as PUDINGfilm - the sudden wave slomo's jarred a little, though in principal they were a very good idea.

    Dear Enrique,
this is stunning! Breathtaking! I have seen it all with my own eyes, including the erruption, and sometimes think, when sharing with friends or family "I wish I could show it to them as beautifull and dramatic as it really was".
And HERE IT IS :) Thank you :)

I have one thing that bothers me: Why such a negative title? Winter in hell? :(
I have thought before started watching "OMG wonder what he has been through.."
But I can see raw breathtaking landscapes and eruption - which had to be- at least for me- the most powefull experience so far..
For me Iceland is a paradise. Austere and perilous, but still never hell.

This is just a thought, but I wanted to share it. Maybe you'll consider renaming it, following a thought you mentioned - from ice to fire, the clash of titans or something :)

I love the work itself truly.
  • Enrique Pacheco plus 1 year ago
    Hi FB,

I´m glad you like the video, and more if you saw all this places, Iceland is indeed a paradise, I can´t imagine any other place where you can feel the nature as you can do in Iceland. I´m in love of this country.

I don´t think Iceland is Hell, OMG no! but when you are near of a volcano, you kind of feel like Hell must be like that. And since that event toke place in winter, in a place surrounded by glaciers, ice and snow. I thought it was quite a nice title. Less specific, more poetic. Isn´t?

    Thanks anyway.

    Cheers.
  • Iceland is a Paradise and have the gate to Hell: Hekla.
