I developed the idea for this short film from an experience I had at the park with my son very much like what happens in the film.
I wanted to use marker for the drawings, but I thought it could liven up the image and help distinguish objects if I used different colors. I used Crayola washable markers since they are inexpensive, readily available, don't bleed through the paper, and are easily cleaned up if they get on anything. I ended up needing five packages of markers to complete the film, as well as some supplemental help from my son's art supplies.
The perspective shot going up the ladder and the hand in the dirt are my favorite shots. It took about 53 hours to complete just the drawings, plus shooting and editing the reference video.
This film won the Best Local Film award at the 2011 "3 Fest" in South Bend, Indiana. It is also an official selection for the 2011 Santa Fe Three Minute Film Festival.
