The Echo Lake 12" 'Young Silence' is released on No Pain in Pop on February 14th 2011.

This video was shot on the Microsoft Kinect by me and Dom Jones on December 14th 2010. I then spent the next seven weeks (mostly after work) making it look like that ^

The video was captured and processed using custom applications developed in Cinder. The software was based on the work that Flight 404 did with his early Kinect libraries.

House of Cards by Radiohead much?|
    :]
  • Dan Nixon 1 year ago
It uses the same basic idea yes (although I hadn't seen that video in full until yesterday). What the House of Cards video did (from what I can tell) was use two different techniques to measure data and then map it in a point cloud. What this video does is use the Kinect to get that depth data and then map it into a point cloud. Which, from reading about the technology involved in that Radiohead video, was a whole order of magnitude cheaper.

So yeah, depth data mapped in a point cloud is the same. They also did some really cool things with particle effects too I noticed. I did some stuff with how the point cloud's points are coloured.

    I understand, no worries ;]

Radiohead's video maps out entire neighborhoods in full 360 though! You're limited to what, 10-15 feet?

Still amazing work though, I was wondering when someone could come up with a similar video! I'm just saying that this is what it reminds me of.
  • Dan Nixon 1 year ago
As far as I understand (and I'm no expert) they used two techniques: one that did 360 depth mapping (which is really cool) and that was for the suburban street; the other was a technique analogous to the Kinect stuff in that it was suited to portraits. Both are point clouds (from what I can tell) so they'll inherently be similarities. Indeed the first thing someone said when we got it working was that it looked like 'that Radiohead video'. So no worries, the comparison's pretty flattering after all!

The Radiohead video uses LIDAR to scan the wideshots outdoors, and if you watch the making-of video, they used a crane to mount the LIDAR. So Dan is correct. That video had a lot more money behind it (it's Radiohead partnering with Google after all)

The fact that Microsoft's Kinect hardware (and soon to come SDK) are putting volumetric scanning technology out there for many many more people to use is exciting, and personally I'm a fan of each new twist in the experiments people are making. Truth be told, this is a very reserved use of the data. However stylistically it fits the droning, airy quality of the song well.

    It's beautiful lo-fi hypercubism!

Dan, if you're ever in Berlin say hello. Would be fun to talk about this stuff.

LIDAR! That's the word I was looking for :]

I wonder if there would be any way to extend the Kinect's resolution using upsampling or frameblending/keyframing. Hopefully somebody will also extend its range using higher powered IR LEDs and space out the cameras. Maybe even using multiple Kinects to blend the data in order to create a wider field of view or higher resolution too.

Either way it's sad that I have so many ideas but so little knowledge on how to make them a reality.

Your video on Hypercubism is mindblowing! Loved every second of it! Hope to see more of your stuff!

I've said on many occasions that the Kinect may prove more valuable for its 'unintended applications' than it ever will for the XBox. Great use of the tech for an unusual effect.

Can't say I am quite into the music itself enough to watch all the way through... someone tell the engineer he's accidentally bumped the reverb to 'fully wet'! :)

Yeah but it's from Echo Lake, must be their sick sense of humour. I turned it off because of the sound of the music. Too much noise. The vid FX was interesting though.

wow. this is the first time I've seen 'youtubeesque' type comments here on vimeo. only here the bashers are other artists....makes for less comedy and more pretentiousness. I enjoyed it Dan. Thanks!
