The Turkish military is retaliating against Kurdish PKK fighters by stepping up its aerial bombing campaign in northern Iraq. Rebel Kurdish fighters are suspected to be hiding there. Here's more.
STORY:
The Turkish military stepped up its aerial bombing campaign against suspected Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq and Turkey yesterday. The bombing was in retaliation after at least 15 Turkish soldiers were killed in a cross-border attack last Friday.
Kurdish PKK rebels say they are holding two Turkish soldiers.
It's the deadliest attack against the military in a year. Public anger is mounting. Turkish Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to intensify a military campaign to crush the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
The Turkish military say the bombings have targeted groups of PKK militants but there is no indication the raids have caused casualties or any damage.
Several thousand PKK fighters are believed to be based in northern Iraq, from where they stage attacks mainly on military targets in southeast Turkey.
Turkey blames the PKK for the deaths of more than 40 thousand people since it launched its armed campaign for an ethnic Kurdish homeland in southeast Turkey in 1984.
