Working with the Massachusetts court system requires a lot of patience to clear red tape. Being approved to film inside South Middlesex Correctional Facility was only the first step. I was allowed two, one hour, escorted sessions within the facility. The first night I filmed the classroom; I was restricted to only film certain women and from selected angles of the room. The following visit I was allowed fifteen, supervised, minutes to interview each woman.
Despite the impersonal situation, each of the four women in the film were forthcoming with deeply sensitive information. I was grateful to use their stories to represent the significance of Venturing Out’s pre-release, business education.
