Tarantino's entire career is based on the fact that he's a total movie fanboy... great to see it laid out :)
  • John Gottschalk 1 year ago
He worked in a movie store and watched what people took out, and then copied what he saw.

But yeah, cool to see all the influences laid bare.

    Yeah that's all he did

Scorsese is the same. Apparently for Shutter Island he just sat down with 50 dvd's and went through them all and noted everything he was going to use (read: steal).

The true outlier with Tarantino is that he is of a very select breed of uber-geek that, through whatever fortunate kink in the genetic makeup, correlatively possess and harness the power of fruition.

And we are richer for it.

Nicely done. Tarantino truly is the first hip-hop filmmaker. He samples everything and still manages to make it unique. He frustrates the hell out of me because I can see him pulling from some of my favorite sources, but you can't deny the end product, which is always entertaining as hell.
  • bt465 2 months ago
mr iron man, if you cared to look up Tarantino in his own word you do realize that he is a martial arts movie junkie and making kill bill was a parody of that genre... even the fact that he uses David Carradine to play bill ... do some research so you won't get frustrated the hell out
  • Iron Way Films pro 2 months ago
Uh, did you even read my comment? I said he pulled from some of my favorite sources, which is David Carridine and the rest of my favorite Kung Fu movies and TV shows. It's the fact that I do all the research and know all the sources that I get frustrated that nothing is actually original. But at the same time he is able to make it new and unique. It's a back handed comment. Pay attention before you comment next time.

Very good on many aspects, but seems a bit far fetched on a few as well. A girl flailing around on the floor is not a nod to bladerunner, it's a girl flailing around. Same with the eye-patch, the getting choked with a chain. Those are just coincidences, nothing more.
  • ikari 1 year ago
I totally agree with this comment, I also think that everything was a bit forced, for example, you can't say a random gore scene is a reference to an specific movie.
  • Cory Prasuhn 1 year ago
Actually, it is definitely a Blade Runner reference because in both scenes the flailing character is played by Daryl Hannah. Multiple references from Kill Bill are not only a visual reference, but a direct reference to other movies the actors have been in.
Also, Tarantino has specifically cited which movies he's used as inspiration for certain scenes, so a lot of these clips are based off of more than just conjecture.

I really like this. But I think the whole reason some people like kill bill is because of its heavy references to classic kung-fu movies. I am a huge Quentin T fan and I noticed the references the first time i watched the volumes and it made me love it even more!

    Yes, good video.
But, most of us who have seen Kill Bill and love Tarantinos work love it because we're film geeks like him and love how he so perfectly pulls off all these homages to classic cinema.
He has a deep respect for it, and it shows through all of his work. And he has no shame in paying respect to all of the work that got his career to where it is now, which is why he makes the references so obvious.
So yeah, I love his work, nobody else could've made Kill Bill as good as he did.
Nobody else would've even thought of it.
Tarantino has said many times that he just loves movies. I believe he makes movies to praise movies. And in doing so it becomes an original collage of art that wouldn't have existed otherwise.
And for that, I'm a huge fan.
    Looking forward to more episodes.
    Good job.

Eversince Tarantino startet out his writer- and director´s career he always explicitly stated that his movies are hommages and persiflages on exploitation-, martial arts- & western-movies of the 60ies and 70ies. In this sense is everything - like the yellow trainingsuit - an intended quotation. In most cases this is even masterly twisted by Tarantino. The vocable REMIX is utterly misleading and defaming in this connection.

I think you're reaching. For eg. Eyes super imposed over the screen? Yes, I haven't seen that a thousand times before. We should crucify Tarantino for having the audacity to do something so sacred. Carrie? Are you serious? Perhaps if you spent less time focusing on others, you could produce work that is actually noteworthy instead of garbage like this.
  • Parker 8 months ago
Calm down Internet Commenter Bartek, did the author ever say we should crucify Tarantino? If you paid attention, you'd see this is an extended piece from 'Everything Is a Remix' which basically says that everyone has to borrow to create except for the rare few innovators.
  •
  • Parker 8 months ago
While the borrowing is done well I can't put much value to his copying but I love that he had Daryl Hannah reference her Blade Runner role. Unfortunately, it's still just a superficial/name drop action..Hannah's role in it has nothing to do with her role in Kill Bill. That said, even his collage of a movie is much better than most of what's put out in Hollywood. At this point, most people acknowledge Tarantino's nerd out experiments and accept it as entertainment unique in comparison with everything else.

Why didn't I think of this. Takes scene from other movies. Actually why not even just take story line from multiple movies. Actually didn't Tarantino do this with Dusk Till Dawn. Perhaps script of 10 movies would be cool which blend really well.

  • Tarantino said once: "I steal from every movie ever made".
Anyway, he is still being one of the greatest filmmakers from our time, I love his movies.
  • Congratulations to Tarantino as well. If you will to copy you need to know from who.
  • Right, and take it to another level

  • Amazing!!!! Very good research!!

  • Matt DL 4 months ago
I think the term is 'rip-off' rather than remix is more appropriate. With a music remix the original source is actually used in some way but in most movies such scenes are re-created. Not to say there is not as much work being done to re-create a scene or do an homage but it does lack originality.

I like what Stephen Castro said. Thinking of Kill Bill (which I enjoyed) as a remix helps because I'm sure I'm the only person on the planet who wasn't impressed with Pulp Fiction. It's like you can't say you don't like Tarrantino because he copies, but suddenly I understand (thanks to this video and the words of Stephen Castro above) the idea of a "remix" and pulling together various things like a collage is appealing to me. It's his vision, his voice. Hearing him reluctantly admit in an NPR interview (I felt like he was cornered and decided to come clean) that he stole the Samuel Jackson bible verse scene from another movie made me wonder what is there to appreciate in doing that? I guess recognizing how great it was and repackaging it. It still feels like cheating, but at least now I see it in a better, more creative light.

I find it so hilarious how so many people over the net just live to crucify Tarantino and how he rips films off or copies them.

As a filmmaker myself, people who deal in visual mediums tend to copy other people. It's not a horrible thing at all. Everyone is influenced by someone and we tend to want to mold ourselves and our creative direction towards those people. Take for instance Wes Craven. Last House on the Left is a direct copy of The Virgin Springs. Sure the time and setting is different, but if you listen to his commentary or interviews, he openly will say that Virgin Springs was a major influence in his making Last House.

If anything, Tarantino does nothing more than pay homage to the films and people who made his life fun. I can say that after watching a Tarantino film, I usually go and search for the films he was influenced by and in the end, it makes me a better director or cinematographer for doing so. I have increased my knowledge of film and film appreciation by ten fold because of directors like him, Kevin Smith and countless others. SO far, it's paid off for me and my career.
