1. Dartmoor - Philip Bloom Comp
Dartmoor is a national park about 30 miles from where I live. I've never really visited the moorland before so for a couple of days in September I took my camera and explored.

Shot on the Sony EX1, no adaptors.

where is Dartmoor? i't an amazing spot
  •
  • James Watson plus 1 year ago
Hi Martin. I used one of Bill Ravens profiles, then finished in magic bullet. Dartmoor is in the southwest of England, it has a reputation of being bleak and depressing, but i was pleasantly surprised. Its very popular with photographers, so it was good to see some amazing photos when doing some research. If i had the time i would do a four seasons film on it. I wouldn't know when to stop, there are so many places there that photographers haven't been.

Its called 'Saint Saens'. We have to use it on our films for the latest Philip Bloom Comp. vimeo.com/groups/bloomcompo2
  • Mark Rajakovic 1 year ago
Camille Saint-Saens is the composer. The music you used is called "Aquarium" it's a movement from "Carnival of the Animals". Beautiful video by the way.

Each shot is amazing. I love the detail and the colour and the focus and everything, but the way you've strung them all together takes away from it all :\

Very nice work. The individual scenes almost looked sur-real. You have a good eye for composition.

Excellent work. If you really shot all that in two days then very well done. Are you using a 35mm adaptor? I'm not very familiar with the EX1, but either way - you've got it down.

Nice one - keep them coming,

    Inspiring, beautiful!

Did you just speed up footage for the short timelapses? Or did you use intervalometer to make photos?
  •
  • James Watson plus 1 year ago
I used either interval recording or low frame rate. Thanks for the comments.

Super impressed with your shots. You've made me in love with Dartmoor; it's now on my places-to-visit list!

I've been scoping out videos done with the EX1, and I'm really leaning towards it being my next upgrade. I'm astounded by the quality. As if you were able to go stock glass on this film, superb!

Its a great camera. This edit is specifically for Philip Bloom's Comp. I will be doing a separate edit that will give you a proper feel of Dartmoor. It looks like i've tried to cram too many shots in this edit.

There's only a tiny lil' thing I'd love to change: give the cuts a longer time to be seen. I find it rolling too fast - and I think, the mood and beauty can sink easier into ones mind when you give it more time and space.
  • James Watson plus 1 year ago
I agree. I will be cutting another version with my own choice of music and longer shots.

I guess I do not have to tell you how good the video looks...haha

Did you use a 35mm lens for all that great depth of field? I am in the market for an adaptor and dont know which one to grab...Letus extreme, redrock...

    Thanks

The first real Vimeo HD experience. Great work, the images are stunning. Is it hosted anywhere in full HD? How much colour correction did you to get the desired effect? Its obvious a lot of work went into this. Thank you for sharing!

Thiiiiis is why the EX-1 is the camera that I crave (I now have an XH-A1) and thiiiiis is the reason I love you.

One question, with what/how/what settings did you export this? I'd like to know because I'm also using FCP and trying to learn compressor and am horrifically failing at producing decent sized films.
  • James Watson plus 1 year ago
    Hi Samu

I used compressor and h.264(best) compression at 1280x720.

Very nice indeed! Great colours, and a real quality feel about this short. Just goes to show (as I've said before) that 35mm adapters aren't the panacea they're made out to be, and that in capable hands, a film look can be achieved with a little effort and polished technique.

    More, please.
