It's a short film - a visual poem - about that moment in New York when you emerge from the subway and find yourself in a new and sometimes unexpected world. Check out our latest Sub City Paris: vimeo.com/28994427

A film by Sarah Klein and Tom Mason
Concept by Jennifer McClory
Music by Erik Satie

    Hey, thanks.
This was shot on the Canon 7D at 60fps, using the Glidecam 4000. Lens was the Canon 15-85mm, set all the way wide at 15mm.
    Thanks for checking it out!

Really nice. I appreciate the mixture of street photography and cinematography.

Very clever using the music used in Man on Wire to accompany footage shot from below street level.

I love that feeling, and this video portrays it very well. The song sounds very familiar; what is it from?

It's Gymnopedia No 1 by Erik Satie, written sometime around 1888

What I dig about it is this 'film school' fresh approach to a subject without the film school 'figuring it out' look... which is a good thing. As a seemingly easy topic, it's not... it's like a rebirth into the unknown where you come out of the subway and have to gain your bearings. Love it.

    Anyway, great work.

I don't know if only positive comments should be left.. i just feel this video epitomizes some of the things that frustrate me about the Vimeo filmmaking philosophy; remove the kit (slo mo, steadicam) and you've got basically got some pretty boring raw footage. Granted, the synopsis gives it more purpose, and I love Erik Satie... but slo mo and steadicam are luxurious tools I know I would use differently; to help visualise a story, or more poignant message.
  • Jordy 11 months ago
I agree Luke, people need to really say what they feel about these videos or no one is going to improve their skills. Just cause they are posted on these channel's doesn't mean they are good.

Excellent photography and pacing! Great concept. I've always been extremely fond of the SE corner of W34th ST and 8th Ave because of the Empire State Bldg that greets you as you ascend from the subway. And you guys even cued pigeons for the shot...fantastic!

Beautiful music and images. Very civilized. That slo-mo approach creates a nice romantic fantasy 'cause there's nothing calm and slo-mo about emerging from a NYC subway. Doesn't really capture the true essence but I'm assuming that's not what they were trying to do.
