Devoid of the thrills and spills of a Warren Miller film - though I do run into a small tree - this video is intended to show, from the perspective of the skier, what a ski descent in the backcountry can be like. In this case the terrain is mostly wooded with some clearer glades and pasture and the snow conditions typical of the early season; coverage not more than 40 cms, quite wet, heavy-ish granular snow on a fairly icy base.
The footage was shot by strapping an iPod Touch to my head and pressing the shutter. Of the 20 minutes that were shot 5 minutes of phaffing about were cut in iMovie 9 but no further editing was done. The soundtrack was recorded by importing the video into GarageBand 5. The music was composed and played by MikeWillStew with Mike playing a Cort G110 guitar and SX Custom 5-string bass, Stew playing various GarageBand software instruments via an M-Audio Oxygen 8 MIDI controller. Will was unavailable to play drums so some Apple Loops were used instead. The completed project was exported optimised for iPod playback which introduced a couple of video artefacts.
Being new to Vimeo I am sure that I will work out better ways to process my work and improve the technical quality of the final product (though probably not the content).
