This is a test of the Aiptek HSHD hybrid camcorder with external microphone jack. The video is of a nice EIA1956 test pattern since I have a face for radio and this test is about the audio anyway. Focus on it. Video is 720p 30fps.
Preliminary testing has shown the external mic jack to have active AGC and be very sensitive to signal levels with a very poor dynamic range. It is very easy to drive it into distortion with popping and clicking on signal peaks.
This clip was from about the 6th or 7th in a series of tests trying to find a signal level that wouldn't distort. The setup is an MXL 990 Mic feeding an Alesis Multimix8 USB mixer with phantom powered. The preamp gain and microphone channel gain are both set on the first index mark above bottom. The Master output gain control starts out at the first index mark and I step it up one index mark at a time. It only gets to about the 3rd index mark before the distortion on peaks is evident.
The microphone is on a shock mount with a pop screen in front of it AC, fans and all background noise sources except for a couple of computer fans are off. I know from previous recordings this is a very low background noise setup with a very large dynamic range.
My preliminary conclusion, unfortunately, is that the external jack is a cosmetic afterthought and not a serious attempt to provide better audio quality.
