On February 1, 2011 The SS United States Conservancy assumed ownership of The Nation's Flagship, The SS United States, when title was transferred from Norwegian Cruise Lines/Genting Hong Kong to The Conservancy.

The announcement, along with the unveiling of a $1,000,000 Capital Campaign, was made by Susan Gibbs, President, and Dan McSweeney, Executive Director. Judge Thomas Watkins, 1st Judicial District, Pennsylvania (retired) presented an inspirational tribute to the "damsel in distress".
