A couple of friends an I are planning to unleash some serious Neon light installation in NYC over the next few months. As part of this project, I'm building some control circuits to control the way the neon tubes are switched on and off. The goal is to produce "kinetic" light installations that are responsive to their environments.
This test circuit is based on the idea of capturing "wavelets" of sound, represented by light, in a infinite mirror scenario. Sounds are converted into light that bounces back and forth across the display of neon tubes (LEDs in this video).
I got the idea to hook it up to an amplifier to see what it would sound like and wound up making a new feedback based musical instrument. Noisy, yes, but that's how I like it.
