Thanks Joe Doan for the comment. The entire work was done in Blender, especially by employing composite nodes and the video sequence editor for postprocessing. I wrote a tutorial on the matter. The tutorial in a PDF file is available at:

I hope this tutorial helps new users of the Freestyle renderer. Comments and suggestions are very welcome.

    I love the examples here.

I'm curious about performance, render time.

Hi Dalai, thanks for the comment. The movie consists of 75 frames in the rate of 25 frames per second (I added a pause of 1 second at the beginning and at the end by postprocessing). The frames were rendered on an old laptop PC (IBM ThinkPad T42, Pentium M 1.7 GHz, 512 MB RAM, Windows XP SP2). The drawing part showing black and white brush strokes was made by Freestyle and it took about 30 minutes to render the 75 frames (i.e. 24 seconds per frame). For comparison, the painting part giving a colorful tone to the movie was done by Blender's internal renderer and it took about 10 minutes (i.e. 8 seconds per frame). The performance of the Freestyle renderer depends on style modules in use (japanese_bigbrush.py in this case) and also on the width and height of frames (640 by 480 pixels).
