Fall has begun in this neck of the woods.

Canon XHA1/Letus Ultimate, Kessler 8’ crane.

Most shots done with Nikon 24mm f2.8 set to f8, some shots with 50mm f1.8 set to f8. Macro 55mm f2/8 was used for the apple shot.

Preset used is “EOS Photo”. You can find it on DVInfo.net.

I tweaked the color and brought the black levels up and did minor white balance color correction.

Narrator is me.

Enjoy.

Breathtaking. Can you describe your color grading process? What software do you use to grade? Do you shoot a flat image, then crush the blacks in post or do you do most of it in camera with master pedestal et al?

    Thanks for sharing this!
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I've recently changed my preset from Panalook2 to one called EOSPhoto which is available in the presets area of DVInfo's XHA1 section. It has nice contrast and is pretty flat from a color standpoint.

I usually like to work on the blacks in post and I also boost the color in post. I use Premiere Pro 3.0 for PC for everything. I use the levels control, the saturation control from the Fast Color Correction plugin and I also use the Three Way Color Corrector to get the exact grade I want.

One thing of interest is that the Nikon lenses create a warmth to the picture which I quite like. For nature shots such as in this film, I don't white balance, I just use the 56k preset. The lenses I use add a golden feel to the picture which, in some of the shots in this film, is pure magic. Why mess with something good? :)

For non-nature shots, I always color balance.

Thanks for the info Steven. And I agree. Shooting 5600K outdoors is a must. :)

Steven, some day I'd love to meet you and just pick your brain. I'm really well known on YouTube for my work, but as of the last few months you've really been my inspiration to better my own work. I watch your videos and take notes. Please, keep doing you thing : )

looks really nice. how do you export and upload a cropped video like this? it looks almost like 2,35:1?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
It is 2.35:1. I use Sorenson Squeeze to create the crop. Basically I define a size of 12870 x 540 and lop off the top and bottom letterbox I have created to have a final cinemascope ratio. You cannot do this in your NLE, no matter which one you are using.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
I do my (1280x536) crop in Sony Vegas 8. Works fine for me...
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 1 year ago
You can even move the crop area up and down, so that you don't necessarily crop from the middle every time.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
You learn something new every day :)

another question about exporting, if you don't mind :)

i use premiere cs3 as well, and when I export as quicktime (H.264, 5-7 mbps, high level etc.) i can't seem to get the right crunch in the black areas, it's way too grayish... any advices? I would appreciate it alot! Thx.
  • Josh Piersma 1 year ago
that has been a problem with h.264 ever since it came out

try sorenson squeeze 5 that's what steven uses

An outstanding video beautifully shot and edited, also I like the sound of the river coming through the very appropriate soundtrack at 00:54. Some gently floating falling leaves, at say 01:41, whilst the lens was facing upwards and turning might have been a nice addition?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I tried to shoot a falling leaf in that area for about half an hour and each time I set the camera rolling, no leaves could be seen falling. Mother Nature was mocking me, it seems :)

OKay, my apologies for the confusion with different versions of this film. I only want one online and it's the one with narrative which has replaced this original file. All the visuals are the same, just added voiceover so all of your comments should still be valid.

Most interesting to note the effect of F8 with 24 & 50 MM Nikon primes. The Ultimate really demonstrates its worth.

    A stunning result.

Very nice, Steven. Is that Dame Kiri singing?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I doubt it...it's from a library online and the singer is not identified.

I think its called the Santa maria. I'm not sure, but I do recall hearing it from my sister.
I would find out, but as of right *now* I'm at school. Google is blocking a lot of the searches....
    :(
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
If you are referring to the name of the piece, it's "Ave Maria"

    Breathtaking!

I really enjoy the crane shots. I know I've said it before...on your other videos...I'll have to get a crane one day!

    Fantastic work.
  •
  • Quality work that reflects these woodlands beautifully.
I'm looking forward to using a crane for my own shots - the one I have my eye on is 12ft long but it will allow me to take some more interesting visuals (as you've proved here) ... I have a steadycam, and a dolly is on the list too - all tools to help.

I uploaded a new version. Changed the narrative a bit to reflect my thoughts a little better. Not big changes and probably not worth watching again unless you are a die hard :)

The crop effect is possible in Vegas. Manually set you pan/crops to desired size 1280x540 and render as custom size without stretch checked.

Hi Steve as mentioned above about the Fast Color Correction plugin... where can I get this from? Is this better than magic bullet looks? Is not the adobe premiere colour correction features not as good?Thanks... Gurmeet.
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
It's part of Adobe Premiere...it's not an extra plugin.

Hey Steven, do you by chance have a photo of the crane with the camera on it? That you could post? Sounds so cool ( I know Geek).
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
I don't but you can log onto kesslercrane.com and see some videos of the setup. I'm going to be doing a short promo as part of a new product DVD they are putting out in the next month or so.

Always good to see a quality production come out of the XHA1. Makes me happy I bought one. Looking forward to getting the new 5d mk2. I'm hoping it will send those Sony boy's packing. Love your stuff as usual and are desperate to get hold of a crane. I've got to run that past the war office first though.

Incredible Steven. Out of curiosity, how long does it take to set up/pack up the crane when you move locations?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
It takes about 5-10 minutes to set the entire thing up alone.

Steven... You are inspiring to many! Thank you for taking the time to help all of us reach a little higher and re-ignite a fire that some of us have lost.

I'm also thinking of buying a Kessler system.. In your opinion, do you see any real need for their new AXIS system, or do you find that you are able to get the shots with what you already have?

    Many Thanks!

what about the XHA1's aperture, is it wide wide open?
  • Steven Dempsey 1 year ago
It varies depending the shot but it is rarely wide open because that's about at the lens' softest point.

It's a balancing act between the camera's aperture and the attached Nikon lens depending how much depth of field you want.
